Morning! Final postcard of the River Tweed from my week away. If you haven’t been to the Scottish Borders, do go. So much to enjoy. Finished writing my book so now for the hard part.

And where are the consequences for people like Gove who voted for it? Trying to make out he’s the wise observer afterwards is just gaslighting us.

This deserves more attention than it has received.

Gove: "we were too anxious as a government to secure those deals in order to show that Brexit was working".

Exactly as so many of us warned at the time, and as the government denied at the time.

Michael Gove admits that post-Brexit trade deals were bad for farmers
Michael Gove has admitted for the first time that the Australia and New Zealand trade deals negotiated by the former Tory government did not protect Britain’s farmers.

This is the man the BBC elevated & is refusing to investigate despite @carolecadwalla.bsky.social l & @bylinetimes.bsky.social
having done all the work for them .
Do we have a precedent for a this ? A national broadcaster ignoring possible treason , isn’t that in itself sort of treasonous 🥴 ?

Seems @Nigel_Farage is trying damage limitation on the Reform Russian Bribes scandal.

He’s known Nathan Gill for 20 years, and claims he knew nothing.

No one believes you, Nigel.

Keep the story moving. Questions must be answered.

It’s the same with Morrissey, Gaiman or Wagner but… the art can feel tainted and give rise to feelings of guilt about then and now. How much did it influence the art is the question I struggle with.

This is a must-read for anyone interested in politics (and the UK, particularly). The assertion that 'home is a place you understand and where you feel understood' is especially poignant in these times.

In an age of populist revolution and radical upheaval, can the centre left do anything more than survive?

How many of us are maintaining awareness of all the stuff going on behind the scenes?- and who is trying to keep it in the public consciousness?

Unexpected rabbit hole today is discovering that "Phwoar!" was first recorded by the dictionary in 1976, and 1972's Carry On Matron may be its first film appearance.

I thought I'd found an earlier 60s TV use, but it seems "Phwoar!" is firmly a 70s phenomenon.

Reading Thiel, Yarvin, Peterson et al. makes you realise what passes for intellectual iconoclasm these days is all absolute bollocks. Why anyone gives any of these people the time of day let alone credibility is baffling.

So, yes, that's why we need to talk about Nigel Farage.

It’s a perfect storm;

1. Defunded journalism creating a vacuum that is cheaply filled by unchallenged bias.
2. Algorithms promoting anger
3. New undetectable ways of buying political control
4. Electoral politics having no resilience to cope with this.

Unchecked, it ends in fascism. Not if. When.

I was there with my then girlfriend (now wife) along with about 5000 others. She wanted to know where the crowd was. We were 2-1 down with 20 minutes left and I think he scored two.

In the UK we have Keir -island of strangers- Starmer, whose government is driving right wing anti immigrant and asylum seeker policies

In Spain, Pedro Sánchez is not only celebrating diversity, they're embracing and speaking positively about immigrants
