My second-favorite aspect is the set design.

#HorrorGameOct
A screenshot from video game Alan Wake Remastered. Set in a dimly-lit radio station, an injured Alan Wake looks at a wide poster for in-universe radio show The Night Owl. The man illustrated on the poster looks unfortunately, goofily cross-eyed at a glance due to the oddly sharp and unfortunately-placed shine off his eyeglasses.

My favorite aspect of Alan Wake I so far is how deeply unapologetic it is in building out its own Definitely Legally Distinct version of Twin Peaks.

#HorrorGameOct
A screenshot from video game Alan Wake remastered. Set in the morning in a diner whose layout is an almost exact match to the Double R Diner in classic television show Twin Peaks, a "lamp lady" (clear reference to the show's Log Lady) is peering into a hallway, slightly hunched over and trembling.

The very format of Shapiro's prompt is emblematic of the "presumed consent" tenor that AI peddlers leverage.

No good-faith interaction begins with a leading question.

Maybe this is only news to me, but signal boosting this anyway because it can't be understated what a treasure trove this archive of Game Freak's zines is. These volumes only show up VERY occasionally online and command a lot of money; obtaining a full set to scan would've cost thousands of dollars.

I wrote a 15 page report on heraldic symbolism in medieval armor and weapon design for my art history class the night before it was due (8am class). Made up 90% of it (only found one book for reference) and got an A. GenAI could fucking never.
wrote 20 pages on Faulkner's The Bear four hours before final papers were due on trucker pills and coffee and cigarettes and got an A, fuck you.
You people couldn't hang with real slackers.

For how nosy modern autocorrects are, every single one lacks the feature I really want:

Refusing to send or save communication if it detects that you've used a Three Letter Acronym without writing out the full phrase first.

Oh no... Andrew Dice wasn't just a cool, friendly pillar of the community, he was one of the people most influential in bringing down the boundaries between the Japanese indie games scene and the rest of the world.

He opened doors and brought so many great stories to us. Farewell to a real one.

Absolutely devastated by this news. SpaceDrake was no doubt a huge influence in drumming up interest for Japanese indie games localized into English and pushing for them on digital distribution storefronts like steam. Huge loss. Might be time for another playthrough of Recettear in his honour.
A tweet from Robin Light-Williams (@BlondRobin) stating the following: Hello to anyone reading this. I am Robin Light-Williams, formerly lead translator for Carpe Fulgur. I am very sorry to announce that my friend and business partner Andrew Dice, @SpaceDrakeCF, has passed away. Pursuant to that, Carpe Fulgur will be ceasing operations.

There are umpteen reasons why the "make fetch happen" insistence on this kind of tooling sucks, but it being foundationally opposed to basic design principles is a real stinker.

Back when I was in university studying software engineering, a constant point of guidance was building *lean* programs. We spent semesters learning to shave KB of memory, slough of unnecessary assets, etc.

This week Samsung pushed a 3GB AI-centric app to my phone with no way to opt out.

About a week left to pick up a half-dozen or more #Shmuptember titles!

Street Cleaning Day and Antecrypt have been my biggest winners so far, but fingers crossed for a Voidblazers compatibility update!

A strong handful of little picks in here for #Shmuptember in here! Gonna thread a couple of them together as I play them:

I did bake pizza for lunch that on the box was described as "thin & crispy".

It certainly doesn't strike me as a good outcome that *any* pizza should be *extra* crispy.

I remember pausing at one point during the tutorial and noticing *six kinds* of mixed media on-screen at once.

Then logging back in for a second session and being presented with what felt like an entirely different game, as a "change of pace".

There's just so much care and effort on display here!

RPG Time never got half as much attention as it deserved. It's like being a kid again, toys and erasers reimagined as heroic treasures:

And *I Think* the last one on the list is Voidblazers.

Sorry to say that I failed to get the Playdate simulator working correctly for this one, so no direct impressions here, but it's clearly savvy enough to make the bundle's sizzle reel!

Back at this!

Cosmic Zephyr DX plays kinda like if a bonus stage from a Sonic game was also a bullet-heavy shmup. I'm pants at both those things, and the visuals can be a bit ambiguous, but honestly the gamefeel is so good that I was really vibing with this one.

The eye exam is the perfect game design. That big E is a great tutorial that teaches you the basic mechanic. But it doesn't baby you and quickly gets hard as they introduce the small and blurry enemies.

3. If you see content that disturbs you, immediately (or as fast as possible) go and play 20-30 minutes of Tetris (or any other fast-paced game with your eyes sweeping over the visual field that has caused visual artifacts to linger when you close your eyes for you in the past).

Street Cleaning Day is a twin-stick where your second stick is automated by default, which focuses the play on how well you can dodge and kite nasty soap bubbles as Pizza Rat. An incremental upgrade system and endless mode has me hooked for better and for worse here.
A screenshot of "Wave: 3" of in-browser game Street Cleaning Day. A rat balances on a paper plate on a grody city street, the sewer lid in the center releasing a sickly steam. Bubbles close in from all sides.

This bundle is just great for Genre Mash-ups, really; how about a twin-stick *Metroidvania*?
MF-01 Aerostrike is mature enough for its own Steam listing, with a full campaign and three game modes. The enemies are bit meaty, but that allows space to experiment with inevitable upgrades:
