Violence against students in schools is a major problem around the world. We have the data to show that.

But most education systems don't have the data to see if they're making progress in reducing violence, nor to pinpoint who is perpetrating violence. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

I recently saw *Herod's Law*, Luis Estrada's first (of four!) satires of Mexican politics (from 1999). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herod's...

This local politician retains an uninformed view of the drivers of poverty.

Good film!

How can we make sure every child is safe at school?

Don't miss the chance to submit your research to our upcoming workshop on school-related violence prevention and response. www.cgdev.org/event/call-p... Submission deadline is coming up (Wednesday, October 15).

For Clean, Crooked Plow, Chronicle of a Death Foretold, and Still Born, I listened to them once in English and once in Spanish or Portuguese, whatever the original language was.

I recently finished my 52nd book in 2025. (I read a few but mostly listened.)

These six were my favorites.

Yesterday I jogged 5+ miles during a staff meeting while colleagues explained bold proposals to reform the global health architecture. @cgdev.org is the best!

We have a lot of studies of cash transfers on education. What do they tell us about impacts for specific vulnerable groups? www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

If you have children or youth who enjoy graphic novels and you want to expand their horizons, I highly recommend Marguerite Abouet's work (with different illustrators).

The Akissi stories are laugh-out-loud funny, and the Aya stories are wonderfully engaging.

What education technology intervention would you say has had the greatest impact for good?

(I don't mean a promising, well-evaluated pilot. I mean something scaled, even if the impact evidence is weaker.)

My guess is probably Education Management Information Systems (EMIS).

I loved Judy Blume's writing when I was an adolescent. She captured the complexity of that time of life fabulously. I revisited her book about a 13-year-old boy hitting puberty, *Then Again, Maybe I Won't* & had forgotten how hard it hits on class issues. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Then_Ag...

Famously, one of the characteristics of Singapore's initial teacher education is high selectivity: only the best are admitted!

documents1.worldbank.org/curated/en/0...

Bahrain sought to adapt Singapore's model and in 2024 had 7,000 applicants for just 330 spots in its national teacher college.

Is there a tool to assess risk of bias that economists commonly use or like?

Most tools I've seen seem to be built around medical studies (whether experimental or quasi-experimental). Some elements seem relevant but many others less so.

In my time in the social sector of @the_IDB, I was consistently impressed with the research and analysis produced by operational teams to highlight key issues and inform decisions by country clients.

Check out their research: publications.iadb.org/en?f%5B0%5D=...
