Lawyer. Not your lawyer. Mother. Not your mother. By day (and frankly nights and weekends), a civil rights lawyer for people who are incarcerated. Other times, just exhausted. Washington DC based.

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

This is a bit weird, but I have to recommend Michelle if you are in the DMV and have to plan a funeral. Today was rough, but she was a blessing!

19 years ago, I made one of the best decisions of my life. I listened to a friend who said she knew this girl who was perfect for me, and agreed to go on a blind date.

It was also smart that we only committed to meet for a drink, but we still talked for 6 hrs.

What the hell is this?

A police officer is in no way capable of doing a medical exam
Eagan Officer Martin Jensen, a specially trained Drug Recognition Evaluator (DRE), was called to assess whether Bimpong was under the influence of drugs. DRE training, provided by the Minnesota State Patrol to officers, emphasizes distinguishing drug impairment from medical emergencies such as strokes.

It sort of seems that the shutdown might be an excuse

As a Jew, a Jewish mom, this is like brass knuckles to the gut.

He hid the 7 year old neighbor under his bed, keeping her safe from the armed goons of the state.

I use these Inspector General reports to explain to courts what is going on inside federal prisons. They cover things like poor food, bad medical care, staff sexual abuse.

I wonder why they got pulled down 🤔

Made myself a store with the t-shirt I wanted:

golden-law.printify.me
T-shirt back says "Talk to me about jury nullification" Front of shirt has Golden Law logo, small, on left chest

People are just too wild out here.
kashhill.bsky.social
This is absolutely wild. I’m on a cross country flight. We are being diverted midway through to Denver. The reason? Some dude is sitting in the exit row who didn’t pay the $155 fee and he refuses to move back to his seat.

I'm sure the smart people at PDS and Second Look Project have thought through this more carefully than I have.

I truly don't know who has the power to grant parole now!!
There's maybe (best estimate, based on vibes) about 300 people still on parol/paroleable sentences. Although the USPC also has a role in DC supervised release. It's all a giant clusterfuck, frankly.

ICYMI, what happens when Congress forgets to reauthorize the authority holding people in jail?
debgoldendc.bsky.social
Here's an interesting bit of news, not related to the larger government shutdown directly:

wapo.st/4o14FQK (🎁 link)

The US Parole Commission pretty much at this point only exists to deal with DC parole issues. Fed parole was abolished a long time ago.
U.S. parole board can’t jail people because it doesn’t legally exist, suit says
Public defenders argue the U.S. Parole Commission should stop operating and release D.C. residents it recently jailed because Congress did not renew the agency’s authority.
