The Virginia Senate just told UVA it’s not getting state funding if it accepts the compact since UVA exists to serve Virginia, its residents, & their interests—not be a tool of the federal govt. Scoop from our student newspaper, who’ve been doing vital reporting www.cavalierdaily.com/article/2025...

Will take a look -- thank you!

It's a fascinating read on a lot of levels. Rich to see him explicitly reference the Air Defense Law, while the LDP continues to turn its back on air raid survivors campaigning for token recognition from their government for policies that anchored them in place during firestorms.

Ishiba's address on the eightieth anniversary of the end of the war is really worth reading:

Currently writing about "open-air" performances of Kabuki and vaudeville in the ruins of firebombed cities, and I'm seeing multiple comparisons to London's West End during the war.

Any recommendations on what to read to get a feel for how entertainment endured in WWII London under falling bombs?

Network news could put this guy on the air during like Lester Holt or the Sunday shows but they don't because they know stories like this would help stop the administration and then the big bet they made on fascism would be for nothing

They’re now publicly threatening a military crackdown of the No Kings protest.

Sen. Roger Marshall: "October 18 is when the protest gets here. This will be a Soros paid-for protest for his professional protesters. The agitators show up. We'll have to get the National Guard out. Hopefully it will be peaceful. I doubt it."

Today in 1976, Gen. Paul Tibbets (USAF, ret.) re-enacted the bombing of Hiroshima he led on August 6, 1945, at an air show sponsored by the private Confederate Air Force in Harlingen, Texas. As Tibbets flew a B-29 overhead, conventional explosives were detonated on the ground to simulate the bomb.

"Mushroom Cloud

A mushroom-shaped cloud rises above Rebel Field at Harlingen, Tex., home of the Confederate Air Force, during a re-enactment of the atomic bomb being dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, in World War II. The re-enactment of the first A-bomb use in war came over the weekend during an air show."

I've got an essay forthcoming on this very incident, drawing extensively on Japanese language coverage of the row. I'll be sure to share with you when it's out!

So much gold to be mined from the diary of Harada Ryōji 原田良次, a maintenance tech in a Chiba-based aerial interception unit tasked with defending Tokyo's skies

His entries are scribbled in the margins of a book 👇 - in part due to paper shortages, in part to keep record on the sly

A few stand-outs:
dfeds.bsky.social
June 20: "Lately, the soldiers' letters home are obviously disingenuous. They only write things like, "Morale is high, working diligently in military service." All of this is a fabrication. Soldiers now cannot write a single true thing."
dfeds.bsky.social
June 26: "A photo taken in front of my aircraft covered with shoot-down marks was ready today. ...I wrote "I'm this healthy..." I'm sending false reassurance to the people in my hometown. Not having bathed in ages, this filthy bearded face will be my last photograph in this world."
dfeds.bsky.social
July 15: "Even in my long military service, I've never seen a soldier die shouting "Long live the Emperor" before the enemy as people claim. Rather, in that instant, they cast off being a soldier and die having returned to being unmistakably ordinary, naked human beings."
dfeds.bsky.social
July 27: "Our military's air control capability is now completely gone....The complete annihilation of regional cities is now near. The enemy aircraft that attacked the base today scattered leaflets that read, "We won't let you eat this autumn's sweet potatoes."

August 10, 45:

"Since Hiroshima, the solo intrusion of B-29s is under especially strict vigilance, and our unit has been scrambling aircraft for twelve hours straight to maintain constant alert over Tokyo. Major General Yokoyama told me, "Tokyo is the next target for an atomic bomb attack"
