RIP Adam Greenberg
He was the superb cinematographer who shot Near Dark (watch it!), Terminator 2: Judgment Day and, of course, The Terminator, which means he’s responsible for one of my favourite shots in cinema that also coined a new genre for its film:
Oh god. They (or someone) did the same thing with UFO SWEDEN, ruining a perfectly fun genre experience.
The limited edition UHD of PHASE IV is on sale today at Vinegar Syndrome. Desert island disc.

... but at least GUT INSTINCT is available on AroVision for those who would like to see it in the comfort of their homes. (Yes, worldwide.)

It thrives in the cinema with a crowd, tho, so get in touch if you want to arrange a screening.

AroVision: Gut Instinct
A unique dystopian sci-fi mockumentary from NZ filmmaker Doug Dillaman, cleverly assembled from repurposed archive materials.

Today is the one year anniversary of GUT INSTINCT premiering at the Terror-Fi Film Festival after a seven year gestation. Grateful for everyone that's helped bring it into the world, hosted it at their cinema, or praised it on Letterboxd.

It still awaits an international festival premiere, btw...

It's been hard keeping this quiet, so glad it's finally anounced!

CR director Alex Philippe and I share an obsession with how materiality changes a film, and this is our Exhibit A

Australian vhs and Slovakian betamax are the MVPs here: the redubbing on the latter is genuinely something to behold!
Says the only guy in our circle who's married *and* has a kid
Just saw a clip of DIE, MY LOVE and all due respect to Lynne Ramsay but actors shouting at each other is my least favourite mode of filmmaking and this looks like a 17-scoop sundae of exactly that
Happy 24-Hour Movie Marathon to all who celebrate, and may your 4 AM experience be roughly like this
"Fresh Lobster" (1928) is about exactly what I'd hoped it would be about.

RIP Peter Watkins. A giant. Few filmmakers could ever hope to be so fully justified in being a crank. He was just...right.

My stomach dropped at this news. Watkins aspired to nothing less than completely rewiring the way we digest the moving image, from duration to montage to the blurring lines between fiction and nonfiction and so much more. A genuine radical.
Literally translated from the poster: "the blood of the sorcerer"
I ate a chewy treat and it took the crown on my molar off. Trick AND treat, motherfuckers!

(At least it's capped, unlike the last time this happened... that time with dental floss.)
Enjoy the rewards of your shithouse year, good sir.
Of course, the wisest choice for Aucklanders would be to go to the 24-Hour Movie Marathon, which is where I'd be if I wasn't working on a film on Wellington and spending the weekend at Terror-Fi Wellington, which means almost as many movies and a lot more sleep
For those curious in Auckland, KOLN 75 (aka COLOGNE 75 as it's known here), the unlikely but intriguing-sounding film about the young woman who put on the seemingly ill-fated Keith Jarrett concert that produced his most legendary record, is screening tomorrow at the Vic as part of KinoFest.
Film screening: Cologne 75 - Goethe-Institut New Zealand

If you want a Halloween night triple-feature in the true spirit of trick or treat, play ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13, THE FOG, and THE THING, but flip a coin before each one to determine whether you play the Carpenter version or 21st century remake
I don't think there's been a weekend box office as filled with now-forgotten films as the one from October 21, 2005. (Putting aside WALLACE AND GROMIT and _maybe_ NORTH COUNTRY.)

What she said! This is one special film.
Watched Pop tonight at #terrorfi. A local scrappy film full of meta filmmaking energy and fun. An ourobourus of diy construction/reconstruction wrapped in love for a dog. The Q&A was inspiring!
Re-connected with DOUBLE NICKELS ON THE DIME yesterday and it may never escape my car CD player. Combines the joy of firing up the neurons of 19-year old me discovering it with a still-trenchant politics and the insane musicianship.

If there was a single musician's death I could undo, it'd be D.
TREASURES OF SOVIET ANIMATION VOL. 1, MYSTERIOUS CASTLE OF THE CARPATHIANS, HEROIC TIMES, THE UNKNOWN MAN OF SHANDIGOR, DELTA SPACE MISSION. All highly recommended. One of the coolest labels out there.
Wow! This sale is on fire!

Titles are selling out. Get those orders in now!
