Usenet rec.arts.movies.current-films, where I first interacted with a not-insignificant amount of folks I still talk to today.
Okay, let's get nostalgic

What was the VERY FIRST online platform that you became addicted to posting on?????

The interview with Mona Fastvold on Big Picture this week is really great and you should prioritize seeing ANN LEE if you're able to.

It's fine to hate whatever you want -- I hate so much stuff people love -- but suggesting that people perforatively like the thing you hate says more about you than them.
I wrote about this a little when I reviewed AMBULANCE on letterboxd but theres an annoying affectation a bunch of critics and movie buffs have where they pretend to like one or two non-TRANSFORMERS michael bay movies as a counterintuitive populist nod and: I hate it. His movies suck ass

lmao this is my apartment building.
Charles is asking the hard hitting questions, like why are modern apartment buildings so ugly? This is Stranger Places with @mudede.bsky.social
Is this the ugliest apartment building in Seattle?

I moved here in 2003 but Sean is right, for a while that little radius was the best place on Earth to be a cinephile. I learned everything.
When I moved to Seattle there were six movie theatres (18 screens) within walking distance of my apartment in the U-District, plus Scarecrow Video and a couple other solid video stores and the terrific Cinema Books shop. Scarecrow is the only one still in operation.

Hate to correct my good friend but I believe this was actually NINJA ASSASSIN, part of a three-movie Thanksgiving marathon we ran that may have also included PORT OF CALL NEW ORLEANS. Don't remember the third film.
Fond memory of smoking weed out of a pinch hitter with @colonelmortimer.bsky.social outside under the marquee before going to watch Ninja (2009) on Thanksgiving day after our shift at Scarecrow.
The last moviehouse in the University District will close its doors this week, after 85 years. It’s very sad news; the Varsity — where my parents went to movies when they were at the UW, in the 1950s — was a place filled with stories. www.seattletimes.com/entertainmen...

The Varsity hadn't been in good shape for a long time but this is a real drag.

This longtime Seattle movie theater is closing
The Varsity Theatre is closing, effective Thursday, leaving the U District, once a hub of moviegoing, without a movie theater.

There's that Roman Coppola movie CQ (fun movie) where Jeremy Davies' character is basically making DAVID HOLZMAN'S DIARY, and after he very articulately explains his artistic impulses behind it to his girlfriend she goes, "But what if it's boring?" I think about this a lot.

Watched The Pitt season premiere again. My biggest problem with this show is that the episodes end.

The run of Filmmaker Magazine under Scott & Vadim produced some of the most fascinating and important work on understanding indie film in terms of economics, technology, and the actual stakes of art. I was honored to write for Vadim, easily one of the best editors I've worked with. Hire Vadim!
Some news: I'm being laid off! After 11+ years and 48 issues, Friday will be my last day. I'm 100% looking for work and definitely not married to being in film. I have many transferable corporate/organizational skills. Email is first dot last at gmail

Rewatched SPANGLISH and despite or indeed perhaps because of its deeply confounding combination of Brooksian idiosyncrasy, mostly accidental but truly blinkered privilege, and real sincerity, I kind of loved it.

Rewatched THE SOCIAL NETWORK after a decade away. Basically no notes on an objectively great and still fairly searing movie that I just don't love anymore. Wouldn't make my top 5 Fincher. It's a crime it didn't win Best Picture.
