BIG NEWS: This morning, @kphipps3000.bsky.social and I have moved The Reveal from Substack to Ghost. You can get the details in the link below. It was a scary decision for us, but we're excited about it and expect to keep this newsletter going long into the future. thereveal.film/the-reveal-h...

People who are appalled by this obviously don’t understand that publishing a nude painting of yourself when you assume a new editorial position is a tradition that dates back to (at least) William Shawn. Know your history before sounding off.
I regret to inform you there is more Olivia Newzzi: the print VF will feature a nude portrait by artist Isabelle Brourman that is also destined for Art Basel Miami Beach. Notably, its inclusion appears be a surprise to VF staff. VF looking worse and worse here. www.artnews.com/art-news/new...

Today at The Reveal: It's a pair of reviews. You can read @scotttobias.bsky.social on WICKED: FOR GOOD and read me on the clever (sort of) true-crime doc ZODIAC KILLER PROJECT. Which will top the weekend's box office?
In Review: ‘Wicked: For Good,’ ‘Zodiac Killer Project’
The second part of "Wicked" exposes the flaws of a front-loaded musical and a true-crime doc deconstructs the true-crime doc.

A little over 10 years ago, The Dissolve shuttered and we started a niche movie podcast that only we had the power to shut down. This week, we celebrate the 500th episode of The Next Picture Show with a special episode on the film that inspired the title: megaphone.link/FILM9131237121
#500: What's In a Name — The Last Picture Show by The Next Picture Show

Today at The Reveal: I wrote about Diane Keaton. Specifically, I wrote about HEAVEN, her mostly forgotten directorial debut, but also about what made her such a compelling presence, even when playing characters who weren't the driving forces in their own lives:
Diane Keaton in ‘Heaven’
Keaton made her directorial debut with a quirky 1987 documentary that kept her off camera while still capturing the elusive essence that helped make her a star.

Remember the recent middle-of-the-night apartment building raid where children were dragged outside naked & zip-tied in the street while black & Latino residents were _sorted by race_ and piled into separate vans while their apartments were ransacked & robbed? That raid? So it resulted in 0 arrests.

This book is out today. It was a pleasure and an honor to help a little bit in the process of creating it. REFLECTIONS tells the story of Roger Deakins' life and storied career in his words—with a lot of behind-the-scenes details and, of course, many pictures.
Reflections - Roger A. Deakins
In REFLECTIONS: On Cinematography, Deakins offers his fans and film enthusiasts the improbable journey of the “boy from Torquay, England” to Hollywood.

Scott makes an argument for the new RUNNING MAN being even more a film of its moment than the 1987 adaptation.
For The Reveal today, I wrote about our running men, the art and folly of adaptation, and the future/present these films represent: thereveal.film/the-running-...

Two versions of the same Stephen King novel reflect their eras while speaking to future-present.
