We all use social media for different reasons; I see here as my virtual office/street, where we can chat about history, archaeology, warhammer, wargaming, sci-fi, music, culture... in short, pretty much anything! I generally follow back (technical competence notwithstanding 🤭) so, welcome all!

One of the most lovely yet ill-thought out forts of the period, John! Beautiful, symmetrical & daunting to approach from sea, but dangerously overlooked by landward high ground & arguably indefensible from assault on that flank; John Churchill (later Duke of Marlborough) took it after a 13 day siege

A Tuesday hobby night... and all is well in this part of County Down; dog asleep by stove, daughter doing crystal art in corner, Egyptology doc on tv and putting together my last 28mm Thirty Years War Swedish regiments - well, mostly supergluing my fingers tbh 🤭
A roaring stove, with a small black labrador curled up in front; and a hobby project in front of that! Three ECW Bicorne & Perry Miniatures command figures awaiting their troops, which will be Warlord Pike & Shotte infantry 🙂

Two pairs of suit trousers remains a wise choice, Hugo.

Absolutely - these were considered educational events (although I'm not sure how 'Pimpo' the clown fitted in to this 🙂) and it's something really worth noting how socially important such outings were...

The irrepressible 'lord' George Sanger certainly did get around! I know he was in Dundee & Aberdeen in 1900s with a real menagerie, which I'm sure was quite a draw for errant pupils! A proper showman, I believe his 'catchphrase' was "I donned my tights the very day Queen Victoria put on the Crown"!

@derbyshiredro.bsky.social one of my favourite churches and places - All Saints, Wingerworth on a recent visit in May... such an interesting site with hidden associated archaeology surrounding it 🙂

Thanks to the school log, or diary, for Hamlet Lane School in South Normanton, now known as the Glebe Junior School, we know that #OnThisDay in 1911, they had issues with attendance. The reasons given were the Pinxton Feast and Sanger's Circus visiting Alfreton.

A handwritten diary entry for 13th October 1911: 'Pinxton Feast and the visit of Sanger's Circus to Alfreton have interfered with the attendance. Two families excluded by Dr. for scabies. Medical inspection.

Wonderful stuff! Do you have any future plans to come to Belfast at all Loreena? Or maybe a winter concert at Navan Fort, outside Armagh?! (I'm totally getting ahead of myself there 🤭)

GenAI truly was the worst technology to come along at this moment.

An energy and water guzzler when we most urgently need to take climate action.

A disinformation machine as our journalism fails.

A bias machine as fascism takes root.

A job killer in a cost of living crisis.

I've heard this about UK passports×, Catherine- funny enough, when my daughter was heading off to a school trip to Spain earlier on in the year... I'd never come across that before!

Roodstown isn't anywhere near that adventurous Mark! But I would have done the same... ocassional climbing over a gate/fence is a yes, teetering on a cliff edge quite a different prospect!
