An extract from the article: "Here in Ireland, wind remains our main renewable resource, but solar is beginning to shine here too. According to energy data gurus Green Collective, solar energy has been breaking records and cutting into fossil fuels. The cleanest days on our grid used to be blustery winter weekends; now they are often sunny summer afternoons. Rooftop panels are spreading fast. By July this year, Irish solar generation had already exceeded the whole of 2024, and is on track to cross the symbolic 1-terawatt-hour mark in 2025."

Renewable generation (that's biomass, hydro, wind, and solar) never dipped below 50% of electricity demand yesterday. Overnight, it exceeded 100% for a little while around 1am.

This is still rare outside of the winter: we saw it in Aug/Sep 2023, only in winter in 2024, and now in Aug/Sep 2025.

On Monday, large-scale solar generation in Ireland reached a new high of 934MW; about 19% of the island's electricity demand at the time ☀️

This took us by surprise - it's nearly October! It seems transmission constraints on the grid were notably lower than usual, perhaps due to extremely low winds.

🚨 A new high for Irish solar today as output exceeds 900MW for the first time, beating the previous high of 864MW set in July.

It seems to have peaked at 943MW at 12.45pm, equivalent to approx. 19% of all-island electricity demand at that time ☀️

Correct. There was a 50kw pelton turbine under the floor of the mechanical engineering lab in the O'Loughlin building in nuns Island. The Hydrology Department did an assessment of the power of the Galway canals in 1985 and estimated an annual average power of 4MW under strict water level constraints

I recall as an student at UoG (then UCG) in the 1990s there were two research turbines at the engineering building at Nuns Island using the canal waters as a power source. Seems we have come full circle.

I was shocked when I first saw these results from standard climate models used in IPCC reports: for high emissions, the Atlantic overturning circulation #AMOC shuts down in all 9 models that ran past 2100, and is well on the way to shutdown by 2100.

Batteries and solar are fast becoming the backbone of a clean, flexible power system🔋☀️

In our #GER2025, we saw California batteries supplied ~20% of evening peak demand in June 2024, displacing gas.
