Eclecticism. Not random, just tangential. Possibly not here at all. Seeking refuge from that other place.

This is not isolated. I'm going to start a thread of other desecrations of Black and non white history and civil rights here:

“I spent three nights and three days in federal custody. During that time, I was never told what I was charged with, was not allowed to shower despite being covered in tear gas and pepper spray, had no phone call to my family, and no access to an attorney.” - George Retes, U.S. citizen and veteran.
I’m a US citizen and a veteran. ICE arrested me for no reason.
Jailed for three days without an explanation or ability to notify anyone, George Retes argues the only path to healing starts with the government taking accountability for its actions.

Currently chiselling into my forehead, in mirror writing, so I can see it every morning:

DON'T. GET. INTO. THE. HELMET. DEBATE. ONLINE.

A Dipper (Cinclus cinclus) stands in a fast-flowing, brown river. It has a dark brown head, blackish-grey body, and a prominent white throat and breast patch. Please visit www.lukehaigh.co.uk. #Birds #lukehaigh #birdphotography #photography.

You too, Dunning Kruger.

It's pointless trying to discuss this further, you're interested in winning an argument with someone on the internet, I'm interested in cycling safety and policy and how to increase livability in our cities. Have a good evening, and one day, come back to this and have a little think about it
drheadgear.bsky.social
Look, you're deliberately misreading me now, I'm sure of it. Plus you're attempting to be patronising. You've proved nothing, and not listened to, let alone refuted, the actual core arguments I've made. You have no real idea of what really makes cycling safer, or how to effect it from public policy
drheadgear.bsky.social
Science says that if you hit your head a helmet can help you. Wow, that's radical.
Your hastily googled review doesn't say how likely to hit your head you are, nor does it make the same assessment for traveling in cars or pedestrians. And it says absolutely nothing about societal effects.
drheadgear.bsky.social
You're really not listening at all. You've spent ten minutes on google and now you're an expert.

If you want to wear one then go ahead, that's your business. But sticking your nose into other peoples business here is actively harmful.
drheadgear.bsky.social
And yet more people have traumatic head injuries in cars, so your efforts would best be spent advising them to wear helmets.

Meanwhile, there's an obesity epidemic killing christ knows how many people every day, who would likely have benefitted from riding a bike to work
drheadgear.bsky.social
One of the major obstacles to people taking up cycling for transport - improving their health and those in their cities - is perceived risk. This is reinforced by helmet campaigns and well meaning people telling them they need to wear a helmet and reflective clothing.
drheadgear.bsky.social
No, it sounds like common sense but it genuinely isn't supported by empirical evidence. If you don't have strong opinions then I suggest you pipe down and stop telling people what to do.

😁 Severely tempted to try that and yell "OFFSIDE REF!"

So on a matchday the Arsenal club shop has about thirty staff on the tills, and when they're free they stick a hand up for the next customer.

I realised today that if you don't bother moving for long enough you can make them look like the classic Arsenal back four...
I think it's Tony Adams, Steve Bould and Lee Dixon appealing for offside here. Their hands are all up in the air in a synchronised fashion.

Iirc Arsenal occasionally loaned their defence coaches to 90s boybands to work on their routines.
drheadgear.bsky.social
No, I'll say I have the empirical evidence and numerous studies on my side. You talk of risk tolerance while trying to convince others your massively inflated risk perception is accurate. It isn't. I'm 55 and have cycled all my life and have never banged my head on a bike.
drheadgear.bsky.social
I'll bet you've slipped or tripped many, many more times than you or I have fallen off a bike. And where are your posts telling anyone in a car to wear a helmet? That's a far larger source of serious head injuries.
Cycling for transport isn't inherently dangerous, and doesn't require a helmet.

It's a French thing, I think. An AG2R/FDJ two up sprint is always going to end badly for both - losing to the other is unthinkable, so they both lose to someone completely different.

The Faroe Islands—population just 55,000—beat the Czech Republic 🤯

An astonishing result. The territory's population is smaller than the capacity of six Premier League stadiums, yet they've just won a third straight international game 🇫🇴
