This arrived yesterday, and I started watching it, so as a fun project, I thought it'd be interesting to do a small review of each episode as I watch them in order, since I've never seen all of them, and never in order!

I'll update this thread as I go.

Hopefully not a 5 year mission! #StarTrek

Why would you give that to men on the edge? Because when Frank leaps someone who believes in him grabs him and lets him dangle. Refuses to let him fall. Tells him to climb up. He refuses, but the help is there.

Men need to know the help exists. www.cheryllynneaton.com/2016/03/29/d...
Daredevil 2: Social Justice Punisher.
In my excitement I have started this essay four times. This is the fifth. I am not certain I can do the character of the Punisher justice with my analysis. I am too giddy for reasoned observations—…

That fucking finale...

SURELY there MUST be another season of PEACEMAKER after this.

Unless there is a plan to pick this up somewhere else...though I don't see where that could POSSIBLY be. @___@

How much more can he bully the WORLD before they just won't take it any more?

Like...it's CRAZY the shit he's doing to HIS OWN COUNTRY, but threatening NATO and Norway to get a PRIZE is nasty work.

How many more times are we going to capitulate to this freakshow?

A good way to win the Nobel Peace Prize is by making threats

And that's how a film like this should end.
dthalliday.bsky.social
But the POINT of the action was really to set up the subversion at the end, because he come to an Arnold film expecting him to win with strength, violence, and a quip, and instead he wins with faith, sacrifice, and the satisfaction of knowing that he will see his wife and child in Heaven.
dthalliday.bsky.social
At any rate...thought went into this film. Yeah, I don't now that it completely works the way they wanted...the action stuff does make it goofier at times than it needs to be (mostly just in the opening...the 2nd act stuff is appropriately spooky with the cults and the Vatican assassins and shit.)
dthalliday.bsky.social
He dies, banishing the Devil just as the bell tolls and it's chance to end the world in this millennia fails again.

Arnold does not win this film with guns and violence...but with faith and sacrifice.

I'm not religious, but I still like stories like that. I think that's what faith is for.
dthalliday.bsky.social
...and she's powerless against his great strength. The Devil is going to win.

But Arnold fights back. He sees his daughter in this girl. He sees his chance to save her the way he could not save his daughter.

He overcomes the Devil's control...and throws himself onto the statue of Michael's sword!
dthalliday.bsky.social
..."God...help me."

Then the Devil shows up in huge, calamitous spectacle, and big CGI monstrosity...and dives INTO Arnold.

It lifts him up and smashes his body around, as it overtakes him from inside, and it appears that all is lost.

He grabs the girl and throws her on the alter...
dthalliday.bsky.social
But he HAS to protect her. It's the only thing that means anything to him any more. His wife and child dead, something he blames himself and God for, his friend dead, and the world at stake...he cannot fail, but he also cannot WIN.

So he drops to his knees, staring up into the light and whispers...
dthalliday.bsky.social
It's actually quite a well staged and acted scene. Arnold, draped in leather and guns, crashing his way into this just BEAUTIFUL church, and looking at all the statuary and religious symbology, drops his guns, knowing they are useless. He feels powerless in this moment, to protect this girl.
dthalliday.bsky.social
You can't actually FIGHT the Devil. Even as Arnold maims his body, he's not actually hurting the Devil...it's just an empty vessel. All his usual action movie tricks are useless.

Which all builds to the final act set pieces where the REAL fight with the Devil is literally internal.
dthalliday.bsky.social
But their ultimate approach does make sense...people are coming to this expecting the usual tropes of an Arnold movie, but the idea was to do a different kind of Arnold movie...something with more depth, where he is vulnerable, and so they demonstrate that the Devil is INVINCIBLE.
dthalliday.bsky.social
I'm making my way through the extras on they END OF DAYS SHOUT! Factory 4K, and it's some really interesting stuff.

The people involved all took the film very seriously...I think the action movie elements end up underserving the spiritual elements a bit, though the intent was ALWAYS to combine them

This is the genius of the Portland protests - they make the claims of lawlessness look not just wrong, but comical

Joking aside, John Carpenter is one of the most incredible filmmakers to ever do it.

Curmudgeonly as he was, he treated genre like ART, & could make any film great no matter the budget. He always knew the assignment.

Even the films he made that he HATED are still pretty great because he MADE them.
dthalliday.bsky.social
Make a movie better by adding John Carpenter's to the title:

JOHN CARPENTER'S BARBIE.

Like...just IMAGINE that. O___O
dthalliday.bsky.social
JOHN CARPENTER'S THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD.

(Honestly, this game is sort of stupid, because you can just put John Carpenter's name in front of any movie and he'd make it better than whoever made it. I just think that particular title is hilarious.)

Publisher HATE nurturing creativity tho. >___<
comixace.bsky.social
What's next for comics? Keeping them accessible and affordable. Moving on from collectors and targetting young Gen Z readers
Griepp points out that there have been slow years in comics and then a dramatic year like 1986 where books still in print. Publsihers must nurture that creativity

It's always wild to me seeing John Carpenter talk about the movies he made that he HATES like they're shit, and then I watch them and they're fucking INCREDIBLE. @___@
