It has arrived in the UK. The wildflowers are amazing!

Quite brilliant. I imagine all the women and children were in a nice hut, keeping warm, as they were not at Stonehenge.

We had a great day in Canterbury yesterday for our Autumn Meeting! Many thanks to our Meetings Secretaries for arranging a fabulous programme, and to our guides at St Martin’s Church, St Augustine’s Abbey and Canterbury Cathedral.

A splendid day was had with the @royalarchinst.bsky.social yesterday, in Canterbury. The earliest still-in-use church of St Martin, St Augustine’s monastery, the cathedral, its drains, and library ticks (arachnid variety). Thanks to Nathalie and Peter the organisers.

Light Rains Sometimes Fall is an urban nature diary, the year divided into 72 microseasons. A book you might want to read through the year. Peregrines, blue tits, oaks, bees and a surprising cormorant (although probably not quite so surprising now, I suppose).

Why Do Birds Suddenly Disappear? is the story of my return to birdwatching after an absence of 30+ years, and specifically of the year (2016) in which I decided to try and see 200 species of British bird. Childhood memories, some music, a lot of birds.

If you’re not familiar with what I do (and with apologies to those who are), a brief rundown of the individual books follows. Tl;dr: nature writing but funny.

Today is Stir-up Sunday - the day people traditionally make Christmas puddings.

The name comes from the collect for the day in the Book of Common Prayer: “Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord, the wills of thy faithful people...”

Are you making a pudding today?

What it does remind me of is the convent and nuns in The Devils (of Loudun) by Ken Russell. All that white masonry…..

Personal note: London has been home for a very, very long time, but as of today, I am also officially a Brit - that is to say, a British citizen. I feel relieved and I feel grateful - but not, perhaps, in the forelock-tugging way GB News/Starmer expect a new immigrant to be.

Landevennec and the Crozon peninsula are so lovely at this time of year, bathed in mild Atlantic, damp air. The camellias are starting to flower. There is a wonderful mermaid in the parish church near the abbey. 🧜‍♀️

Marvellous. What a sight!

Red kites taking domestic cats is another misbelief. We have had an expansion in numbers & range in N Leics & all sorts of myths are emerging. The heavy road traffic is rarely invoked for cat mortality - tho kites do use roadkill.

PS it is brilliant to see a big kite over the garden…

🥰
