just an aside: free speech is instrumental to a functioning democracy because you can't do democracy properly if people don't know what's actually happening.

these lies harm us (in Portland) and poison the entire possibility of democratic participation for everyone else.

okay i think about materials science in a sci-fi context a LOT. like, i am reasonably sure materials science advances is what will unlock a LOT of futuristic shit. (we can't build railguns or orbital tethers or several other things because we don't have the materials for it!) is this your read?
