The issue is just funding and resources. That's it.

Really the same as in education.

You have to pay for it, and then it works wonderfully.

There are many problems in Ontario health care, but today I got a same-day urgent care slot for the kid, in our town (which has been recruiting doctors). We were in and out in 10 mins, prescription in hand, no thought about money or insurance for the visit of course. Things can work. (The kid is ok)

New post (en français): Quebec's Bill 1 and its proposed provincial constitution is epically incoherent and incompatible with the Canadian constitutional framework into which it purports to fit.
Ceci n’est pas une constitution
Le projet de constitution québécoise n’est pas sérieux

Quebec's new 'Constitution Bill' doubles down on the absurd idea that a province can directly amend the national constitution. It purports to directly change the text of provisions of the Constitution Act, 1867, and repeal others.

Uhh, what is this unconstitutional horseshit?
"The constitution bill would also have the Quebec premier recommend who should be appointed the province's lieutenant-governor. ...
The new legislation would also rename the lieutenant-governor the "officer of Quebec.""

For a certain audience of Canadian policy experts, I imagine there are no more exciting words than "automatic federal benefits" for low-income Canadians.

Though I also imagine the details matter a lot.

Guzman is a former Goldman Sachs exec, so as a former Goldman exec himself, the Prime Minister believes he's worth this obscene salary. As Markham Hislop of Energi Media said, "I voted for 'Value(s)' Carney but got Goldman Sachs Carney instead." Value(s) Carney has gone AWOL.

Why do I say 'more qualified'? Because maybe we should have fewer wealthy people involved in politics. Maybe people who aren't willing to do public service for less than $300,000/year should fuck off, and hard-working, public service-oriented people can do the job better!
emmettmacfarlane.com
I'm not sure I love the idea that journalists might not cover something (or politicians don't address matters of principle) because the potential reaction might have political consequences. In fact, it might be one of this country's problems.
emmettmacfarlane.com
And as Carney slashes program and service spending to boot. Pathetic.

I will forever find the idea that you can't find equally qualified (maybe even more qualified) people for half the price in pretty much any of these positions, such as CEOs for state agencies, university presidents, etc. etc. etc., to be total bullshit. Overpaid and unjustifiably so.

It's certainly a lot of symbolic tripe. But it's also yet another attack on the national constitution. I'd like to see someone stand up for the constitution, and constitutional propriety, for a change. But we're a nation governed by cowards.
emmettmacfarlane.com
Meanwhile NONE OF THIS GETS COVERED BY THE MEDIA.

Where are you journalists??? A province is essentially vandalizing the constitution, and the feds and other provinces are permitting it!

THIS IS A PRETTY BIG FUCKING STORY!
emmettmacfarlane.com
The result is that we live with the blinkered idea that patently ANTI-CONSTITUTIONAL ideas a permissible so that we don't 'offend Quebec'.

As it directly damages the legitimacy of the constitution, it should be seen as a constitutional crisis.
emmettmacfarlane.com
This farce has been enabled by the federal government refusing to take Bills 96 and 4 to court and have them struck, and by the federal Department of Justice participating in constitutional vandalism by recognizing those change in its own consolidation of the constitution.

I’m sure there’d be a perfectly sound and normal response if Michelle Obama had said:

“I have had an open channel of communication with a foreign dictator”

Although it'd be nice to see the US doing more to stop the next batch of Ukrainian children from being abducted in Russia's illegal war.

Just bone chilling. And when the imprisonment of critics is combined with his offer to enrich and immunize his loyalists, this is how democracies die fast.

But it's still our choice. Don't let him silence you.

For the record, the NAME of the office is undoubtedly part of the "office of" the LG for the purposes of the constitutional amending formula, which requires the approval of the House of Commons, the Senate, and all ten provinces. Quebec can't unilaterally rename it.
