In basically any modern Linux you pick, you can nowadays install web browsers that do *not* cause hooks to erupt from the walls and flay you.

Nowadays this flaying hook feature is mostly confined to uncommon programs such as calculator, spreadsheet, text editor

If the end of windows 10 is making you switch to Linux, good news: recompiling the kernel can now be done *without* blood sacrifice. They patched that out like a decade ago. No blood sacrifice needed.

You will merely have to give up a cherished memory, though.

I think the fact that we allowed cops to lie openly with no real consequences is part of How We Got Here. If the people with the ability to shoot others in the street are allowed to lie about it, you can't expect other officials to abide by a higher standard.

Yeah, mention that a little bit down thread. I think that’s a big part of the teen piece especially- the highway thing has been around 70+ years for example, but teens having nowhere to go has been getting steadily worse.

There's a reason so many ancient and premodern societies viewed "idleness" - what we would often call just enjoying life and having time to think and play - as a sin and in many cases one of the more serious ones, and it's not just that they hated joy.

There was SO MUCH work needed doing.

For adults who weren’t in a Certain Class, I suspect it’s more of a TV fantasy that we thought everyone else had, and as with so many things we’ve been stripped of our illusions by talking online.

… but it seems to me that a lot of the image of what things Were Like is something of a (prosocial!) fantasy- an imagined past when everyone was less tired and hung out more and had friends and were happy.

Obviously there’s more to it. The general lack of places to go (especially for the young)! The social trauma of both the pandemic and the Trump… everything!

Plus a lot of this was ALREADY THERE. I can’t say without more evidence how true this is…

I’d say that more than the internet or “people joking about canceling plans,” the lack of steady jobs (that don’t socially exhaust you) is probably a bigger piece of things. There’s other forces at work- but I think that’s the core.

But I think about how my father never really had a friend group in my life time... but he’s had consistent longterm jobs, and *did* go out with folks from work occasionally- and he’s fine with that. (We’ve talked about it!)

The people I see talking about the “loneliness epidemic” are mostly wrong about the causes I think. I get it’s easier to blame the internet or millennial humor or the kids or whatever.
