I feel like this was also the western perception of Hinduism prior to the rise of the Modi/BJP regime. Fact is, there isn't a religion/culture in the world that hasn't been violent and bloodthirsty when in a position of majoritarian power.
Maybe the “rise of” framing doesn’t help Westerners accept that religiosity, extremism, and violence are all essential parts of Buddhist history. Trouble accepting this always indicates Buddhism is an empty plaything for some people’s projection, not a multifaceted tradition.

Talking about fasces (the symbol, not the political philosophy taking the name from the symbol) made me look up the history of how people viewed it, and I’m feeling vindicated in my dislike for older American monuments that use them.

Me about to piss off a bunch of capitalists: If Bezos doesn’t want to pay his fair share in corporate taxes, I don’t see why we shouldn’t nationalise Amazon and make it a subsidiary of the post office.
