Funny story: ‘Grue Theory’, the claim that monsters will eat you in the dark, remained a popular delusion from 1977 until disproven by the band Nirvana in 1991.

Dammit I hit the end of the available Firmament content in Fallen London. Time to grind for various things until I can continue… (or until I have the resources to reasonably subscribe again and keep working through Exceptional Stories)

Discworld QOTD, from Interesting Times

“‘Am I alone in thinking, by the way, that it doesn’t add to the status of the University to have an ape on the faculty?’

‘Yes,’ said Ridcully flatly. ‘You are. We’ve got the only librarian who can rip off your arm with his leg. People respect that.’”

Builder's tea is distinct from the authentic upper class British method of making tea, which is to microwave a bowl full of loose tea leaves for 10 minutes and then mix with rolled oats to produce a soupy porridge.

… this is a brilliant framing.
Virgil stopping each book of the Aeneid for some sudden Augustan propaganda was just his ancient version of ad breaks

"a single person of this demographic may have committed a crime, therefore we must punish the entire demographic" is a policy response you may recognize from fascist governments dedicated to ethnic cleansing elsewhere.
It didn’t even take 6 hours.

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are on the Muppet Show tonight

If you’re in Baltimore there’s The Book Thing- free books! You just need to dig through the Dan Brown books to find anything good.
If you like books but wish they were cheaper, allow me to introduce you to: Used books.

If you like second-hand books but wish they were free: Libraries.

If you like reading but can't get to a used bookstore and won't support the library (it knows what it did!): Scroll X and go slowly insane

We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like, “I feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive, Charlie Brown…”
Begone, foul dwimmerlaik, lord of carrion! Leave the dead in peace, Charlie Brown!
A screaming comes across the sky. It has happened before, but there is nothing to compare it to now, Charlie Brown.

I feel like this was also the western perception of Hinduism prior to the rise of the Modi/BJP regime. Fact is, there isn't a religion/culture in the world that hasn't been violent and bloodthirsty when in a position of majoritarian power.
Maybe the “rise of” framing doesn’t help Westerners accept that religiosity, extremism, and violence are all essential parts of Buddhist history. Trouble accepting this always indicates Buddhism is an empty plaything for some people’s projection, not a multifaceted tradition.

AI bros already grabbed people with disabilities and children as shields, I guess this was inevitable

They sure do. So get to it.

Talking about fasces (the symbol, not the political philosophy taking the name from the symbol) made me look up the history of how people viewed it, and I’m feeling vindicated in my dislike for older American monuments that use them.
