You know I'm a firm Dem supporter but I actually don't agree, I think the degree of GOP misrule has meant that Dems have to spend more & more political capital just to keep society from collapse instead of being able to devote more focus to dramatic expansion of the social safety net or services.

Because they've basically had to be for at least a decade, possibly two or three decades, when the GOP is utterly uninterested in sensible governance.
(Also there's changing demographic patterns as well - the child tax credit for instance was both extremely good & also fewer people are having kids)
