Fascism is such a fundamental attack on wonder and the human imagination and I think everyone should have the opportunity to let their imagination wonder as it wanders — doesn’t matter what you do for a living. Your mind matters! Your relationship with the universe is meaningful!

Team Austen overall but I do have a soft spot for Jane Eyre.

Democratic strategists aren't that clever

THIS. (I mean, I didn't vote for him because I don't live in Pennsylvania, but the difference between "probably not the greatest choice but a committed populist" and ... whatever the fuck he is now, is so stark.)

I definitely know people to whom music is a closed book that they have no interest in.

My point was that he was able to fool people before the stroke, as the commentary from me and others in the rest of the thread makes clear

It's not ableist to acknowledge basic medical realities, for fuck's sake

This is why I still read paper books. I always have ebooks handy for when I'm out and about and don't want to be lugging a 700-page tome, but dead tree books are just better.

Matt rocks. I keep saying that we would be in so much better shape if he, @scalzi.com and @chriswarcraft.bsky.social were universally acknowledged as the paragons of masculinity that they are.

"What has been built of value has been built from human virtue, and human virtue, like human progress, exposes the Republican project like it exposes any supremacist project, as a project void of virtue, opposed to human progress, and even to humanity, and even to humans."

The existence of Congress definitely does not prove love.

I have long believed that we should be WAY more vocal about how police and ICE constantly murder dogs, and I think this is great messaging actually.

The reality is that you can mobilize a whole lot of usually tuned-out Americans around a “someone is being mean to hecking doggos” cause.

The Catholics have been solid on the environment for longer than that (with the significant exception of refusing to budge their nonsensical position on family planning)

YUP

Since the advent of ebooks, and therefore the elimination of the condition of "I don't have anything to read", I have become more and more ruthless about DNFing books that aren't doing it for me.

... I mean, if you're speeding, you're speeding, I don't see why you shouldn't get dinged for that.

(Fifteen years of driving hybrid and then electric cars have made me a total killjoy about driving speed, a fact for which I do not apologize. Get off my ass, I'm mileagemaxxing here.)

It's an opt-in feature of their app, which detects phone use while driving. (And is clearly able to distinguish between when I'm at the wheel and when I'm using public transit, since I am pretty much always doing something on my phone while on the bus/metro!)

You know what got me to quit, cold turkey, ever looking at my phone in the car for any reason other than GPS navigation?

Knowing that my insurance company was tracking my driving patterns and that un-distracted driving would save me money.

Also, people gotta make up their minds about white people and food because they’re always like “your food is unexotic and bland and also how dare you ever try anything from anywhere else.” Give us an out here.

(Yes, Fetterman was already problematic; no, he wouldn't be the mess that he now is without the stroke)
