you will doubtless be delighted to learn that the Le Guin goat-calling charm from a Wizard of Earthsea ("Noth hierth malk man/hiolk han merth han!" may be a livestock counting-rhyme.

On Spec has long deserved recognition for best semiprozine at the Hugo Awards, but has never even made the ballot because it's Canadian and most Hugo voters are U.S.-based.

2026 will be your final opportunity to nominate an institution that has been an incubator for so much talent.

With our new issue, we are making the sad announcement that this will be the final year for On Spec. See www.onspec.ca for details.

A new small press? iN tHiS eCoN0mY / p01i+icAL m0M3nt?!?

YES. We need new homes for new stories. Even now. Especially now.

I love and trust the people behind Homeward Books, and I hope you will join me in backing them.

So much gratitude.

I’m beyond honored to be the inaugural recipient of the Massachusetts Graphic Novel Award.

Thank you, Mass Center for the Book & Boston Comic Arts Foundation, for all the passionate and hard work.

I have English family and when I try to explain America they always look--understandably--wildly confused. Like I am exaggerating for effect. I would look the same way. Living here is a constant exercise in bending your concept of reality. Or attempting to resist that bend.

I don’t usually cover breaking news, but this story is truly wild.

A pastor in central PA brought an AR-15 to church and pointed it at people during his sermon. Gun safety experts and internet commentators are, predictably, not happy!

Dauphin County pastor under fire for pointing assault-style rifle during sermon
In a move experts called a serious safety violation, he pointed the unloaded weapon at churchgoers, while asking for a 'violent action of faith.'

There are no national newspapers or broadcast networks doing straight journalism anymore

The Washington Post & CBS News are now pure billionaire propaganda, and everyone else is sliding down that path

Last week, new WaPo opinion editor Adam O'Neal quietly carried out another purge of staffers, cutting editors and major names like Marc Fisher and David Hoffman, among others.

Meanwhile, he welcomed three conservatives to the section.

Why would I want to give money to Columbia when they just pass it on to the Trump administration? Would be happy to give back my degree, though.

Carol Emshwiller's great, weird, gentle novel Carmen Dog is always worth re-upping. Consortium are celebrating their 40th anniversary with mini interviews and Lise Solomon's & Bob Harrison's (new to me!) recs are doggone amazing.
Now I get to close 3 tabs, phew.

Screenshot from Lise's interview with 5 books and covers (titles and authors below):

What are 5 Consortium titles you love and why?

Tell Me How It Ends: An Essay in 40 Questions by Valeria Luiselli (Coffee House Press)
This short book about Valeria Luiselli’s work translating for immigrant children will make you sob on the BART train.

Carmen Dog by Carol Emshwiller (Small Beer Press)
After learning that former rep Bob Harrison named his dog Carmen for this book, I knew it would be a great read. So true!

I Hotel by Karen Tei Yamashita (Coffee House Press)
Epic, brilliant blend of real and imagined history of SF Chinatown.

Blue Marlin by Lee Smith (Blair)
I’m not from the South but the family dynamics and life seen through a young teen’s eyes is so perceptive and universal.

Animals Strike Curious Poses by Elena Passarello (Sarabande Books)
Learned a lot and laughed a ton, damn she is funny.
Kevin Huizenga pencil sketch for the cover — a stage with many people, a dog-headed woman, some more animals, all signing, with some trees and buildings behind and the silhouettes of an audience in front.

I could not get a review or response to that book, ah well. Gray insisted we use his page design, I love the art, although the typography was fun, too. We got to visit him which was a surreal treat. His books are dark and cutting but playful, too. He was having a lot of fun.

Schattenfroh aside, there remain so many experimental works by small presses that fly under the radar. E.G: Old Men in Love by the great Alasdair Gray. Pub'd by Small Beer & prob. the most beautiful contemporary book object I own. & it totally disappeared. Other Examples?

Forthwith this frame of mine was wrenched
With a woeful agony,
Which forced me to begin my tale;
And then it left me free.

Since then, at an uncertain hour,
That agony returns;
And till my ghastly tale is told,
This heart within me burns.

I pass, like night, from land to land
