Doing my calls genuinely does make me feel less helpless — it's low-key for sure, but it's a good not-nothing "I have ten minutes, let me do this" action!

This week, I've been reminding myself that art matters. Stories matter. Books matter. They give people hope. They help people survive. And sometimes, they're the only things *to* survive.

I've been reminding myself that resistance is collective. Whatever thing you need to do, feel pulled to do, know you need to do: do that thing. That thing matters, not because it'll save everyone or fix everything, but as a part of the larger organizing collective that transforms things *together*

Making trans stories, which matters, but also offering up my art in service (illustrating a zine cover put out by a local organizing group, etc) and also I've been working lots with local organizing groups to feed my neighbors. It's tough to always feel like we're helping but we are!

In case this is helpful for more folks -- learning from resistance in African SFF has been really helpful for me. Here's a presentation I did on learning liquid forms of resistance from Sofia Samatar and @suyidavies.com

How cool is this??!? The National Building Museum is hosting "In Pursuit of Healthy & Equitable Cities" 2/12 - using my novel BLACKFISH CITY as a springboard!

Come through, DC! It's free, and there are free copies of the book for all attendees (while supplies last)

Writers & artists who are also activists, what actions are you taking to help / fight back / feel less helpless?

I need guidance / inspiration / motivation

🚨NEW STORY 🚨

Last month, over 400 activists were imprisoned by Israel for trying to bring aid into Gaza. 1 of them was Zue, an army vet.

Here, me and Zue discuss her voyage to Gaza, imprisonment, NOLA's role in the ongoing genocide in Gaza, & more.

One of the worst things about living under fascism. I remember watching the 2020 Delhi pogrom unfold live on social media. We all saw how it happened, how Muslims were attacked, by cops and civilians, & then we saw those same Muslims blamed, & activists & students arrested for the 'riot'.
Ultimately you're not supposed to believe it. It not mattering is the point. The bolder the lie, the greater the impunity. The ultimate victory for evil is not convincing you, it's the truth being irrelevant.
We’re supposed to believe this is a domestic terrorist attacking ICE with a gun

Anyone know any good histories of liberation theology in Latin America? Not so much the original texts or contemporary theological analyses as actual histories of the movement, its rise, spread, evolution, impact.... decline?

Have you read Things With Beards by @sentencebender.bsky.social ? It imagines Macready as The Thing inhabiting a queer man arriving back to a NYC that is beginning to deal with the AIDS Crisis.

28 YEARS LATER: THE BONE TEMPLES was much better than the last one, AND it has the distinction of being the 1st horror movie in years to make me so nauseous I had to leave the theater because I thought I might throw up.

(I didn't. & it was admittedly a very personal non universal gross out)

Loved this episode. It makes me want a show where writers just talk and try to make each other feel better. Love the point about celebrating wherever you are in the process. And for the record, @claymcleod.bsky.social is an astonishing performer and an astonishing writer (Read KILL YOUR DARLINGS!)
