New from me at Cato: I go through the numerous and massive First Amendment and academic-freedom violations of Trump's proffered "compact" with universities and then talk about the mechanism by which it would be enforced, by way of what I describe as a "retroactive push-button guillotine."
Universities Must Defend Their Independence by Rejecting Trump's "Compact"
The Trump administration has proffered a “compact” to universities that would require them to surrender their independence and academic freedom. How many First Amendment violations can we identify in ...

TIL that making the buses faster is “ruining the city”

sam is the east coast version of armand domalewski: he's well connected and wealthy; he's desperate to align with power, marketing himself as "just a smol bean guy;" and he's hellbent on ruining the city in which he *currently* lives for other, long term residents

Contrast all of this decimation of the CDC & unraveling of vax recommendations with the fact that Trump got a covid shot and a flu shot yesterday. The message is clear: they dont care if *we* die, but they sure as fuck wanna make sure they dont

an incontestable fact of the second trump administration is it is actively trying to sicken and kill as many americans as it can

Among those RIFd:
—leadership of the center for immunization and respiratory diseases;
—leadership of global health center
—leadership of the measles outbreak response; 1/4

Attorney General Ford has issued the following statement on the Department of Justice's indictment of New York Attorney General Tish James.

The prosecution of Tish James is the product of a broken system that allows lawless billionaires to rule alongside corrupt politicians.

It’s as much a story of New York City as Washington, D.C.

But it's here in New York where a new era of politics will be born.

People will scoff at virtue signaling and then wonder why today’s billionaires don’t build museums, libraries, hospitals, and universities like Gilded Age ones did.

Of all the news in this NYT survey of sitting federal judges - incl 47 of them think the SCt is mishandling its emergency docket - maybe the biggest is that 65 sitting fed judges (37D, 28R), folks circumspect for a living, responded to a NYT survey. Stunning. And a sign that something is very wrong.

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

Ok so he's got some sort of cardiovascular problem that theyre trying to keep under wraps. Thats the proper way to read them going out if there way to be like "his hearts great actually. Younger than youd think!"

He got the COVID and flu Vaccines like every 79 year old should this is a good thing.
"Cardiovascular age validated by by ECG and found to be 14 years younger than chronological age" is a nonsensical phrase.

A rare admission from the administration that policy choices have knock-off effects.

Still can’t get over the fact that Thiel’s description of an antichrist is so thoroughly opposite of the Bible’s that it unironically makes him a compelling candidate for being one.
ebharrington.bsky.social
What Thiel is saying about tax havens = what Altman is saying about copyright:

"I can't be rich unless you let me steal from you."

This is how Broligarchs differ from oligarchs of yore: the latter tried to hide their thievery; the Broligarchs trumpet their entitlement to steal as a natural right.

Turning Point USA spokesman Andrew Kolvet responded to the harassment their organization contributed to that forced Rutgers professor Mark Bray to flee the country. The full statement is long, but here’s how he ended it:
Good riddance to him and good luck, Spain.
America and Rutgers are better off without him. But it begs the question: Why is Rutgers employing an advocate for political violence? He should be immediately fired and the university should disavow his vile, un-American ideas.

unlike the rest of these folks (and unlike appellate judges and supreme court justices), the job of a district judge is essentially to see what's in front of them
chrislhayes.bsky.social
It's very striking how clearly they seem to see what's right in front of their faces in way that so many others -- law firm partners, university presidents, members of congress, and on and on -- refuse to.
