If you just arrived here and are following me, hi! I have a couple lists in my profile you might be interested in. You might even be on one, if you are just getting back into an old account. If you want to be taken off, just let me know.
Otherwise, there’s a cheese tray and crudite in the back….

Were I to speculate, I would suppose some unexamined faith in “science” and “engineering” as a fundamentally different sort of problem-solving than drawing pictures, when they’re actually a lot closer than many realize (probably on either side, really), was at play.

Reminds me of the gimmick match that came to me in a fever dream a few years back; 16 wrestlers, 4 rings, 1 waterpark eliminator match.

An interior cage divides the 4 rings, with 4 wrestlers starting in each. If a wrestler is thrown into the pool they can only return to a ring via waterslide.
A crude pencil drawing of a waterpark containing four floating wrestling rings, an interior cage dividing the four rings and four waterslides leading to each of the rings.

Your grandfathers fought in two world wars for your right to wear an inflatable penguin/chicken/frog/unicorn/dino suit.

Don’t let some dweebs who grew up on Call of Duty and Fox Late night intimidate you.

kind of fun that frog is now both a fascist-adjacent and antifascist-adjacent icon.

slippery little guy, that one!

Every comic cover since has been trying and failing to reach the heights glimpsed by this Carmine Infantino cover for Flash #133 in 1962. You may not like it but this is what peak performance looks like
Flash being turned into a puppet while thinking "I've got the strangest feeling I'm being turned into a PUPPET!". FUN FACT: it is impossible to see this cover and not want to see more

One of the cartoons in my new book 'Physics for Cats' which is out now in the UK, USA, Canada, France and Germany. Order from your local bookshops or online: www.tomgauld.com/
Two beetles on a stick.
One beetle says to the other "Do you ever get the feeling we are being observed by another lifeform"
Zoom out to reveal that they are in a glass case with two scientists studying them.
One scientist says to the other "Do you ever get the feeling we are being observed by another lifeform"
Zoom out into space. Abouard a spaceship, two aliens watch the scientists on a screen.
One alien says to the other "Do you ever get the feeling we are being observed by another lifeform"
The aliens turn to look out at the reader.

Text below the cartoon reads:
From 'Physics for Cats' by Tom Gauld. Preorder it at www.tomgauld.

57: Yes, it was a curious thing about that mermaid; she was always flattered by being mistaken for a lady, and yet in her heart she was far more fish than woman.

I want to share one of my favorite of Lord Dunsany's Jorkens stories. These were the archetypical "club tales" - stories told over a glass of whiskey, which might just be tall tales, but which you wanted to believe.

"Mrs. Jorkens" (1930), first published as "The Mermaid's Husband"

I have to wonder what Hemingway and Orwell (Blair, whatever) would make of this if someone told them.

Just published at PNAS (@pnas.org): “Electing amateur politicians reduces cross-party collaboration”

We show that districts electing first-time members of the U.S. House experience substantial declines in bipartisan representation in the subsequent Congress.

Bad Bad Hats is good, actually.

Psychic Readings is a great idea for an album (it’s all bands like The Ophelias and The Front Bottoms covering their songs).

Gwinn is a great autocorrect and I’m keeping it.

That Ed Gwinn show is better than I expected.
Interesting that it seems to draw from PEARL with the crumbling reality. And there’s some unstuckness in time with Hitchcock and all.

"One foot in the grave - and one foot on the pedal" is a pretty good line.

It is strange to me how much Stephin Merritt has faded from public consciousness. I guess these are his pre-rediscovery years.

On the other hand, you know she’s the type to come down with pneumonic plague, say “it’s nothin’, jest feeling a little wheezy” and go back to splitting logs for the church bonfire cookout.
