The existence of such places is both a triumph and a deep embarrassment of America.

Fund. PUBLIC. Schools.

If you missed the details of what Crayons2Calculators does and why they're so important to Durham's public education system, you can go to this point in the thread:

What exactly *is* Crayons2Calculators, you ask?

Well C2C is basically what you'd call a "trade name" for what was known as as the Durham Teacher Warehouse Corp

They ran a warehouse that stockpiled donated school supplies, sorted by supply type, and every teacher in Durham could get stuff for class

End of Week 72. Feels like an undercount given how much alcohol I had at the party yesterday, but I'll take it 😎

And even if you can't donate personally, spreading the word is a huge help too!

We've got a summary you can boost or quote here:

This is not a border crossing.
There’s no law that any of us have to show our papers on the interior.

This is a blatant civil rights violation. How is anyone supposed to know whether this man is a real ICE agent or just pretending to be one?!

And a pair of brown-throated parakeets dislodging fruit from a tree

#birds
Photo of two brown-throated parakeets, partially obscured by foliage. One is standing on a branch under some leaves. It has a green body, mustard-like yellow-brown feathers on its throat, brighter yellow head, and a short curved beak. Above the leaves, the head of a second parakeet is also visible, poking up and looking to the left of the camera lens.

I did spot this Venezuelan troupial hiding in a tree though 🤓

There is a section of this resort that has dozens of barn swallows flying around all day, it's pretty incredible to see. Tried taking a video but it doesn't really capture the experience

Q: How many layoffs have you authorized?

TRUMP: It'll be a lot. And it'll be Democrat-oriented.

i don't think there's any way to productively use them. "win a majority and appoint judges who will mulch those powers immediately" is, i think, the ideal outcome.

this 100%. the coding part of developer interviews has always been near-useless. the architecture part is invaluable.

but with llms all of a sudden some devs act like writing an api, basic sql, or streaming over a map is the most important part of their jobs. it never has been. it never will be.

sure, they get me a dopamine drip

but what really gets those juices flowing is solving important problems

and claude lets me do that way faster and more reliably than i could alone

It's not clear to me how selective employees could be RIF'd. They didn't define the competitive area and then rank employees. They dumped people they didn't like and called it a RIF. They'll sue and be awarded backpay and attorney's fees.

Because when everything is on fire, the thing you want to do as a store owner is build your place out of materials that are highly flammable
atrupar.com
Trump: "Portland, I mean -- every time I look at that place it's burning down. There are fires all over the place. When a store -- there are very few of them left -- but when a store owner rebuilds a store they build it out of plywood. They don't put up storefronts anymore. They just put wood up."

There must be some mistake, I read 50 Atlantic articles about how RFK Jr just wants to help Americans eat more vegetables
gravelinfluencer.bsky.social
They continue to eviscerate the public health machinery that has quietly kept Americans, and others around the world, safe and healthy for decades.
The staff of the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, the journal that reports on health trends and emerging infectious threats, was also laid off. The publication’s storied history includes a June 1981 report that five previously healthy gay men were treated for an unusual pneumonia — the first hint of the AIDS epidemic. Roughly 70 Epidemic Intelligence Service officers — the so-called “disease detectives” who respond to outbreaks around the globe — received layoff notices, according to a person familiar with them. The service was spared during an earlier round of layoffs in February.
