It is also delusional thinking.
You think flattery is going to keep that man on your side in the long run?

Good luck.

There is perverse thinking, and a step below that is thinking that a president that is illegally sending US military units into US cities should be awarded the Nobel Peace prize.

The big guy who crushes everyone and manages to keep the ball wins?

I think my understanding of French politics is similar to my understanding of rugby.
I don’t really know the rules or the game but I can follow the drama of a big match.

(Perhaps I am just a slow learner.)

I would ask people to please explain France to me, but then it took me two decades to *begin to understand* Britain so I suppose that would be too time-consuming.

Unusually I disagree with this @TheEconomist leader on Gaza. Trump’s plan is NOT a ‘radically different vision from the moribund approach under Oslo’. Indeed one of the most striking things about the 20 points is that they move the US towards the classic Oslo vision of the end-state 1/3

Just in case you meant me, I did not even mention Islam, I was trying to point out how tolerant most British Christians are.
helenebismarck.bsky.social
The interfaith work that is happening in the UK is inspiring. That does not minimize the very real extremism out there.
helenebismarck.bsky.social
Atheism is no guarantee of tolerance.
And faith is no guarantee of intolerance.

But it serves the agenda of any authoritarian to suggest that it is that simple.

I think this is hugely important. I have done a lot of research on religion and politics for my book (about 🇬🇧) and I cannot overstate the difference between the pundits and politicians who talk aggressively
about "cultural Christianity“ and the people you meet when you actually go to church.

"People who attend church or identify with a Christian tradition are not systematically more (or less) nativist, authoritarian or populist than their secular counterparts. Conversely, people who hold nativist and authoritarian views are often also Islamophobes, and vice versa." 👏 @kai-arzheimer.com
Islamophobia in Western Europe is not driven by religiosity
Are Christians more likely to be Islamophobic than other citizens in Europe? New research finds European Islamophobia has no link to a person’s religiosity.

Und wenn man nicht immer nach dem Schreiben das Gefühl hätte, dass das alles sowieso trivialer Quatsch ist, den eh schon jeder weiß.

🧵🚨

The UK’s independent scientific bodies are highly vulnerable to politicisation - over the past 5 months I've been working with @martinmckee.bsky.social to map out their vulnerabilities and it's not good news.

Today our report is published!

UK’s arm’s length public bodies are highly vulnerable to politicisation
Seven in ten Britons say it is important for top scientific institutions to be independent in exclusive new polling.

Politics is perception.
Which is why it is in such a mess.
