Itโ€™s been said that everyone should work a service job for a year after high school, and I think thatโ€™s true but I think it should be a five-year plan includingโ€ฆ

- living in another country for a year
- caring for the elderly for a year
- teaching for a year
- surviving as an artist for a year

That's one hell of a discovery
A reminder there could always be a hidden Saxon church inside your house
โœจDeerhurst, Gloucestershire. A kitchen in the nave and a bedroom in the chancel hid within plain sight an Anglo-Saxon chapel built by Earl Odda (a relation to Edward the Confessor). Re-discovered in 1865, it is the most complete surviving Saxon church in England. #thread

Something doesnโ€™t have to be old to be historic and important
The east wing built in the early 1900's and was in essence rebuilt during WWII that wing is not particularly historic.

Not all English eel-rents were owed to English landlords. In 1086 the Abbot of the Holy Trinity in Rouen held land in Harmondsworth, with a fishpond & 3 mills that payed a total of 60s. & 1500 eels per year.

It's not clear if, or how, the eels got sent across the Channel.

Lady at home, reading a letter from her sweetheart. But what does it say? Is he overseas, as painting on wall suggests? Or is that seascape about turbulence of love? By Gabriel Metsu.

The etymology of โ€˜turtleโ€™ is interesting as shell.

'Turtle' comes from the French 'tortue,' which in turn comes from the Late Latin 'tartarucha.'

โ€˜Tartaruchaโ€™ was short for the phrase โ€˜bestia tartaruchaโ€™ which means "infernal beast" or "beast of the nether regions."

Reading a book currently in preparation for publication I was amazed to find the author retrospectively referring to the US DoD in the 80s as โ€˜The Department of Warโ€™ - is this kind of retrospective naming now expected of historians?

Seems to be a tiny mouse (other suggestions gratefully received) hitching a ride on this fifteenth-century manicule. In a copy of Aristotleโ€™s Nichomachean Ethics, printed at Barcelona c. 1473. Now @theulspeccoll.bsky.social Inc.3.H.3.3[3472].
I find that a lot of military history books are long. I'm reading a book called Bloody Crowns that argues the Hundred Years War was actually a Two Hundred Years war

Yโ€™all thereโ€™s a book coming out about the Maginot Line and itโ€™s about 500 pages and I could sum it up in less than one.

It failed. It failed hard.

When not nailing heads onto spikes or ordering witchcraft ordeals, Ranavalona I of Madagascar liked to readโ€ฆ just not the Bible, as that was banned (to the horror of Queen Victoria). Here she is with her favourite book, Women Who Ruled the World: 5000 Years of Female Monarchy #womenwhoruledtheworld
