Democratic erosion but for public health. They are slowly grinding the infrastructure into bits. So dangerous. Children will literally die.
NEW: The entire staff supporting ACIP was laid off, and most working groups haven't met in months.

That means the US may not make routine vaccine recommendations for more than half of children in 2026, and it could halt new vaccines in the pipeline. My latest:

When I was a kid my family gave money to the local food bank, but once a week they would also take me to the store to choose items I would WANT to eat

They explained to me that the kids using the food bank don’t often get treats. They don’t get any choice

It was a lesson that really stuck with me
If you want to find a local food bank, you can use the website below.

If you’re donating, it’s best to donate money. If you want to donate food, PLEASE donate food you or your family would actually eat, including things like breakfast cereals and snack foods.

Health insurance costs jumped for workers & employers in 2025.

This will get worse if the GOP refuses to extend ACA subsidies.

Meanwhile, the seven largest health insurance companies made a combined $71B in profits in 2024.

Still not sure we need Medicare for All?

Bird flu is back, big time

Remember, back in March, 2025, RFK Jr unveiled his "unorthodox idea for tackling the bird flu bedeviling U.S. poultry farms. Let the virus rip." (www.nytimes.com/2025/03/18/h...)
“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which tracks human cases, and the Department of Agriculture, which monitors animal outbreaks, have both suspended routine communication with states, leaving many officials without up-to-date guidance on how to detect and contain the disease”

NEW: Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services just got an email telling furloughed workers to return to work Monday. They will be paid starting Monday, but won’t get backpay for precious furlough days until the shutdown ends.

This is bad.

When the Vought/Trump people start making NIH institute directors political it is a VERY BAD SIGN for all of US science, which stands on NIH/public funds.

Institute directors have always been serious scientists selected by other scientists— not political appointees.
VERY TROUBLING NEWS REGARDING NIH INSTITUTE DIRECTORS

This is why we fund scientists to study things like oyster slobber even if you don’t think it sounds important
⚠️ Chinese researchers have invented bone glue that mimics how oysters stick to surfaces underwater.

The adhesive can reportedly repair orthopedic fractures in 2-3 minutes, even in blood-rich environments, and is bioabsorbable.

With the Trump Administration firing so many senior disease detectives, dismantling public health, ending federal funding for mRNA vaccine R&D, & retreating from multilateralism by withdrawing from the WHO & ending its funding of Gavi, the US is HIGHLY vulnerable to another devastating pandemic
Hundreds of infectious disease specialists have been let go by the Trump administration. Here are four who helped to keep pandemics at bay.

Parents will ask "is something going around?" and we would, based on media reports, anecdotal data, and experience would answer "oh yeah, probably something viral".

The CDC produces the NREVSS dashboard which tells us exactly what diseases are "going around".

Case in point: staff of Morbidity & Mortality Weekly Report, #CDC's critical information tool. Most MMWR staff were informed Friday they'd been RIF'd, leaving it unclear what the future of the publication would be. It appears these firings have been rescinded.
