Are you a HUD or USDA tenant? Know your rights during the government shutdown!
🏢Continue paying your portion of the rent
☎️Contact an attorney ASAP if your landlord tries to hike your rent or evict you during the shutdown
🔍Check out nhlp.org/govshutdown for more detailed info on your housing rights
Graphic titled "HUD and USDA tenants' rights during the government shutdown" that explains what happens during a government shutdown, urges tenants to find legal help so they can know their rights, and notes that most tenants in HUD and USDA housing should not experience a disruption in their housing at this time because of the shutdown. There is a disclaimer at the bottom that notes this is not legal advice and if the shutdown lasts past November, tenants' rights will change and they should seek legal help.

I did some research for @homelinemn.org a few years back and found that 26 states allow tenants to make repairs and deduct those amounts from their rent, to some extent or another. Minnesota does not. A huge hole in our laws, especially when some cities do not meaningfully enforce their city codes
juke-box85.bsky.social
"City data obtained by the group indicates more than 40% of Duluth rental properties had a code violation...The average time it took the fire department’s Life Safety division to open and close a case was about 15 months."

Right to repair is a commonsense solution to ensure renters have safe homes.
Duluth Tenants Union files petition for right-to-repair ballot measure, despite city opposition
The group says it has nearly 6,000 signatures, which the city must now verify.
