“I consistently break a rule I consider to be not only fake but pernicious. I know what I’m doing and why.”
-ursula k le guin
Fake Rule: The generic pronoun in English is he.
Violation: "Each one in turn reads their piece aloud."
This is wrong, say the grammar bullies, because each one, each person is a singular noun and their is a plural pronoun. But Shakespeare used their with words such as everybody, anybody, a person, and so we all do when we're talking. ("It's enough to drive anyone out of their senses," said George Bernard Shaw.)
The grammarians started telling us it was incorrect along in the sixteenth or seventeenth century. That was when they also declared that the pronoun he includes both sexes, as in "If a person needs an abortion, he should be required to tell his parents." My use of their is socially motivated and, if you like, politically correct: a deliberate response to the socially and politically significant banning of our genderless pronoun by language legislators enforcing the notion that the male sex is the only one that counts. I consistently break a rule I consider to be not only fak but pernicious. I know what I'm doing and why.

Also: if you work for ICE, even if you’re not one of the ones arresting citizens or tackling 15-year-olds or zip-tying kids together and segregating them by race, you’re part of the mechanism making it happen, and you should suffer long-term social and post-regime-change consequences.

Some weirdo on Twitter has been absolutely melting down for like 36 straight hours because I posted:

When this is over, do not forget what ICE did, and what ICE is. And do not make room for them in society. Make sure they know that they are, and will continue to be, reviled and beneath contempt.

A crowd of right-wing agitators just stormed through chanting “Whose streets? Our streets.” A woman appears to have been shoved to the ground (hear clothes were dirty and hand had a small cut). A right-wing man may have been punched.

Bauer said RW influencers don’t follow journalistic norms of balance, independence & not participating in stories... they start out w/ an ideological vision of the world & then narrate what they see in a way that fits that vision. “The consequences are that we have two competing visions of reality”

Right-wing media influencers are now being welcomed into the federal government to promote its messages. This kind of media access shows a deepening alliance between the Trump administration and an online world willing to misrepresent facts if it means furthering political goals.

I can’t believe an inflatable frog is my hometown’s symbol of resistance, and yet of course since I am from here I absolutely can

this is old school homegrown “rioting over the airport changing its carpet” Portland freak shit. it transcends the Portlandia mythos. writers would not think of this

The U.S. Department of Labor, under Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer (former US Rep from OR), has cut the wages of agricultural H-2A workers. Hourly pay in OR will go from $19.82 to as low as $15.25 - 23% less - while other more skilled positions will pay slightly more, $17.62.

Remember that time Andy lost a lawsuit because he couldn’t process serve Antifa. Then a jury heard the facts of his other claims and resolutely returned a verdict of “Lol. LMAO even.”

Now that the local and national press have started to cover the Portland ICE area round-the-clock in reaction to the President, Antifa have devised a plan where they are encouraging one another to come in animal costumes.

The costumes serve the function of masking the violent extremism to make the direct action appear like a family-friendly gathering on camera, and to whitewash the past ultraviolence.

In 2019, Antifa devised a similar plot by giving out free "milkshakes" at a protest. But they couldn't contain their bloodthirst and nearly killed me when they saw me. In 2020, they mobilized a fake "Wall of Moms" where female Antifa supporters and members wore yellow shirts to act as human body shields while violent rioters behind them hurled projectile weapons.

I'm at the scene where ICE abducted multiple people from Lincoln and Foster this morning.

A WGN producer was among the people taken, allegedly because she was among a group of bystanders who tried to intervene. ICE agents hit this car while making their getaway.

My guess is the contempt hearing in Don’t Shoot and Jesse Merrithew was crossing Schoening or Dobson. I remember crossing one of them but not on anything terribly important (“isn’t it true that the sky was blue that day?” “Well, under the totality of the circumstances, our officers couldn’t assess…)
