Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?

I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

My dad was in the Army and we lived in Missouri, at Ft. Leonard Wood, for two years. I can say without exaggeration it was absolutely the shittiest duty station we ever had, and that includes living in the middle of the Arizona desert.

I visited Australia many years ago and went to an animal sanctuary. They had two juvenile Tasmanian devils there. At feeding time they brought out a cooler and threw out some poor car-flattened creature, and the two devils each bit onto an end and started fighting for it. It was hilarious.
