I genuinely think this is a reason it's GOOD that Stephen Miller is playing his cards now. Bc we can beat it, legally and politically, when the stakes are [lower].
New:

At a Gateway Pundit conference, former Trump attorney Peter Ticktin said he “wouldn’t be very surprised” if there’s “an emergency called” before the next election, as "it's necessary."

"And with that emergency, we're going to be able to turn the tide.” www.mediamatters.org/voter-fraud-...

President Trump promised to bring prices down on Day 1, but it is Day 270 and he has allowed a government shut down as utility costs and food prices continue to rise. Will he keep his promise to lower prices for hard working Americans? I’m ready to help when he is.
Grocery Prices Keep Rising. Frustrated Consumers Are Trying to Adapt.
Record beef prices and coffee that costs $1 more per pound since May have shoppers cutting back on some foods, stockpiling others.

Good points in this thread about my suggestion of a way to use the ICE raids to reach into the cultural spaces that Dems are struggling to access. As he notes here, Rs sometimes do alienate the voters that are key in their coalition, and Dems can win them. Trump is not a magical exception to this.
Dems really have to take the opportunity here. Their wins in 2006-2008 were based on part on loosely conservative-coded dudes of the time a) not liking the churchiness of Republicans then and b) and developing increasingly critical views about the Iraq War. Dems needed to engage them and did. 1/
ICE's military raids and masked kidnappings are resonating deeply/negatively in the cultural spaces we keep hearing Dems need to reach: Manosphere, Joe Rogan, country music, disengaged voters. That's rare and it gives Dems a big opening to engage.

Thoughts on this:

New in PN: Scenes from Portland's imaginary insurrection

"I’ve been taking images that are nowhere near this one conflict driveway — ones of puppies & kids playing, & families having picnics — b/c the idea that Portland is burned down & a war zone is just preposterous" — @timdickinson.bsky.social

Today the Supreme Court heard arguments in the case of Louisiana v. Callais and Robinson v. Callais, which together challenge a federal court decision outlawing a racial gerrymander in the state of Louisiana. At stake is Section 2 of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, which declares: “No voting….

Probably the most important thread going right now
Trump's mechanism to pay the troops during the shutdown is by far the most illegal budgetary action he's taken as POTUS, potentially setting the stage to break everything.

It's also needless because Congress would easily pass a troop pay bill if Johnson were willing to gavel in.

Long thread.

Sunday reading:

I wrote about the aggrieved extremist who is currently firing thousands of federal workers and ravaging state capacity based on conspiratorial nonsense - and about mainstream media’s infuriating tendency to sanitize Russell Vought and the regime he serves.

This week’s piece:
We need to talk about Russell Vought – But Properly
Why certain mainstream outlets insist on sanitizing Vought as a devout “small government” conservative – and what actually animates his war against pluralistic democracy

All of this, in violation of the Constitution.
Trump and Vought are now breaking both sides of spending law. They’re illegally not spending where the law requires them to spend, and they’re illegally spending where they don’t have the money to spend.

What we have is an appropriations king.

Spending “deals” are meaningless under that setup.

Don't let this story die. These are not little boys. This is not in any way acceptable. All these pathetic losers need to be condemned in the strongest language possible by ALL republicans and prevented from ANY political positions for life.

I had all these big plans, dreams and goals for the window of my life between 45 and 55, and essentially all that time has been eaten up by fighting back against that motherfucker instead.

I will never forgive him or his enablers for that (among many other much more serious crimes of course).
