Modest proposal: PDX mayor, OR governor and the state’s Senators should invite Trump on a tour of Portland. Let Trump see for himself whether it’s a “hellscape”
davidcorn.bsky.social
A classic case of irresponsible both-sidesism from the NYT. The story is that Trump and MAGA propagandists are lying about Portland to incite a conflict, not that there are different views of the matter.

I know this schtick is tired, but …
Can you just imagine the meltdown on Fox if Obama had greenlighted a Qatari military base on US soil?

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

I'm indebted to @wudan.bsky.social for her top notch fact checking for my forthcoming book and saving me from my own unforced errors. She is also the book's first reviewer! "Beautiful and heart-stopping ... writing"
Thank you for the kind words and the amazing fact checking

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

Sometimes progress moves fast. Just 15 years ago, as the editor of @earthislandjournal.bsky.social, I published a special issue all about the fight against "King Coal." Today, coal has been knocked from its throne. In a recent US govt mining auction, coal sold for only 1/10 of a penny per ton

There are real people on the end of these grants. Rust belt autoworkers. Great Plains farmers and roughnecks. Coal communities looking to a new economic future.

It’s genuinely heartbreaking. They don’t have do this — the money is already obligated — but I guess they enjoy destroying lives.

American citizens are being detained & brutalized.

This is a moment of world-historical importance:
