There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd.
It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.
Graphs showing 25 years of budgets for the National Institute of Health, NASA, and the NSF. In all cases, the proposed budget for next year is far, far below any year of the previous quarter century.

Whats up Athens!?? #evolution2025

American science isn’t just under siege—it’s officially occupied territory today. Trump’s NSF plan? Abolish 37 divisions and cut the budget to the point it is a glorified science fair run by politicians. 75 years of world-leading innovation? Poof. We’re trading CRISPR for leeches and witch trials.

Love seeing all the people who care. Big cities are amazing, but this bravery is what makes my heart burst.

Are steps at the Michigan State Capitol ADA compliant 🤔

The message is: crowd large.

Many politicians, administrators, and business leaders, in bowing to Trump, have drawn confidence and comfort from the perceived vibe shift.

Events like this puncture that delusion.
You can stop asking where the mass opposition is. It's everywhere.
People poured out to protest not only what Trump has done—and what they fear he will do next.

Did you ask for a fish fact? No, but you're getting one whether you like it or not. 🐟

Electrosensitive rostral appendages that can detect prey items have evolved multiple times within mormyrid fishes, and one of these organs is called the Schnauzenorgan.

doi.org/10.1093/iob/...
The craniofacial morphologies present within the mormyrids examined. CS1 = Chin-swelling gain 1; CS2 = Chin-swelling gain 2; SO1 = Schnauzenorgan gain 1; TS+SO1 = tubesnout with Schnauzenorgan gain 1; TS+SO2 = tubesnout with Schnauzenorgan gain 2 (A) The first independent gain of the chin-swelling is represented by Marcusenius ntemensis . (B) The second independent gain of the chin-swelling is represented by Marcusenius livingstonii . (C) The single gain of the Schnauzenorgan is represented by Gnathonemus petersii . (D) The first independent gain of the tubesnout with a Schnauzenorgan is represented by Gnathonemus ec hidnorh ync hus . (E) The second independent gain of the tubesnout with a Schnauzenorgan is represented by Campylomormyrus phantasticus . Photo credits: John P Sullivan

Some microphagous fishes have a unique pocket-like throat structure, epibranchial organ (EBO), that helps gather tiny food particles. New study of 13 species reveals diverse EBO anatomy, weak phylogenetic ties & possible link to diet
