If the framers of the reconstruction amendments heard someone argue that some new law in a recently readmitted southern state didn't discriminate against based on race because it was just intended to screw Old South Republicans, (who just happened to be mostly black) they would be appalled.

Roberts is saying that the court's own precedent from a couple of years ago, where it ruled that Alabama had to draw racial fair maps, doesn't apply to this (identical) case, essentially because the Alabama case was poorly argued.
It's a terrible argument, but the hill Roberts is gonna die on.

Every angry screed about how Biden blew it just does not acknowledge the whole reason Biden was unpopular was because he did the exact economic policy they claimed to want instead of pummeling the workers with austerity until Doordash servants worked for pennies and Subway footlongs were $5 again.

I'm a bit of a dissent apologist for this reason

I understand the kinda nihilist dunks on them as meaningless, but i've seen too many dissents become majority opinions to think they don't have value--as doctrinal roadmaps, as mobilizing tools, as records of the truth when the majority lies, etc.
