The Virginia Senate just told UVA it’s not getting state funding if it accepts the compact since UVA exists to serve Virginia, its residents, & their interests—not be a tool of the federal govt. MIT became the first university to reject the Trump administration’s compact of demands, after its president Sally Kornbluth said the school already “meet or exceed many standards outlined” by the federal government.

Very curious to see what the public schools do. They seem to have been chosen strategically...

More of this. Signing this authoritarian devil’s bargain would betray higher education’s independence and the pursuit of knowledge.
jaydaronson.bsky.social
I honestly would not be surprised if some of the schools agreed to the deal.

I don't know about this. I wouldn't be surprised if a couple of the public schools on the list accepted the deal and who the hell knows what Penn is going to say...

Here's a snippet from the MIT president's letter to ED
Screenshot from link that reads: The document also includes principles with which we disagree, including those that would restrict freedom of expression and our independence as an institution. And fundamentally, the premise of the document is inconsistent with our core belief that scientific funding should be based on scientific merit alone.

In our view, America’s leadership in science and innovation depends on independent thinking and open competition for excellence. In that free marketplace of ideas, the people of MIT gladly compete with the very best, without preferences. Therefore, with respect, we cannot support the proposed approach to addressing the issues facing higher education.

Black families tend to have strong preferences against nursing homes, usually driven by concerns of inadequate care. Seeing that Black nursing home patients have significantly worse outcomes, and that they are driven by *within-nursing home* differences in care, confirms this suspicion.

Nursing home value-added for black patients is 30 percent lower than for white patients, with most of the gap reflecting differences within, rather than across, nursing homes, from Liran Einav, Amy Finkelstein, @nealemahoney.bsky.social, and James C. Okun www.nber.org/papers/w34324

Imagine studying a technology whose presence in the classroom is so detrimental to the development of writing and research skills (including even the will to know the sources behind claims!) that mitigating its effects becomes a central goal of course design, and concluding with tips on adopting it.

A striking thing about articles I’ve read claiming to “study the effects” of generative AI on student writing skills and consumption of information is that (1) they nearly always find the effects are negative and (2) most “conclusions” are still written assuming that we must use AI, for some reason.

“Someone” cancelled my family’s flight out of the country at the last second.

We got our boarding passes. We checked our bags. Went through security. Then at our gate our reservation ‘disappeared.’

From @joshuapvaughn.bsky.social:

The transfer of medical services at the Dauphin County jail from PrimeCare to Mediko happened last week but not without an “unprecedented” level of obstruction by the former provider, according to Dauphin County Commissioner Justin Douglas.
Dauphin County jail’s new medical provider deals with ‘obstruction’ by company it replaced: ‘It puts people at risk.’
PrimeCare’s CEO said they provided the necessary information, but Mediko’s CEO said he was "disappointed" by how things have gone.
