Honestly nothing feels different here today at all. There are still ICE raids all over, they're still letting people out at Whipple into the cold with nothing, and like you said, people still need food and rent money.
please remember that no matter how many “ICE is losing in MN” articles you read today, there is still a very real, urgent, ongoing crisis in Minnesota.

people need food and they need rent money. that has not changed.

I forgot to include the 9th DA on this list: Jose Garza, in Austin.

(He last won reelection in 2024, you may remember because we later learned it was Elon who'd spend heavily to defeat him. boltsmag.org/houston-aust...)

Context: These are all prosecutors who've been aligned with the criminal justice reform movement.

Several of them just won reelection last year: Krasner in Philly, and Morales and Fatehi in Virginia.

The big question is whether they will actually follow through with "the hard way," because the that way involves gonads that these folks don't always possess in sufficient quantity.
NEW: House Democratic Leaders Jeffries, Clark and Aguilar say in a joint statement, "Kristi Noem should be fired immediately, or we will commence impeachment proceedings in the House of Representatives."

"We can do this the easy way or the hard way."

New: DHS now says that two weeks of missing surveillance footage from ICE's Broadview Detention center isn't "missing," it was never recorded in the first place and thus can't be produced in an abuse lawsuit. An utter shitshow:

For any elected official who needs to hear this, I impart a lesson learned from the NFL:

When the other team is tired and on the back foot, you don’t call a timeout so they can catch their breath. You grind their fucking face into the dirt until the final whistle blows and you’ve won the game.

So keep pushing. Anything short of ICE’s abolition isn’t nearly enough.

And I’d say that even ICE’s abolition should only be the start of ending the violence that came to feel “normal” under Trump.

The problem with symbolic compliance isn’t just that they fall short of ending violence.

It’s also that people duped by the symbols will switch sides to defend the oppressor, emboldening them to become more violent and violate more civil rights than before.

The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.”

That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.

Political Scientists would call it a "tactical concession" (RRS' Spiral Model). Human rights and democracy campaigners need to make sure it leads to more gains (positive spiral) instead of stalling progress (negative spiral).

I once asked my late uncle what he thought ended the legal Jim Crow era. He immediately responded that the murders of Chaney, Goodman, and Schwerner in 1964 were the moment Jim Crow died. When I asked him why he said: “When White folks fight White folks, it changes everything. Enough was enough.”

This is a hilarious and ongoing thread, though I think it is unfair to improv comedy groups because they ultimately produce something of value...
you say "i asked chatgpt"
i hear "i asked [an improv comedy group]"

an improv group wrote this report
instead of a therapist i use an improv comedy group
chatgpt is much like an improv comedy group

1) you are the audience, giving it prompts
2) it produces things roughly shaped like your prompt
3) it is trained to respond with Yes, And
4) it has the factual accuracy of improv
5) it does not understand comedy
