On this day in 1893, George Hodgson was born in Montreal. At the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, he won two freestyle swimming gold medals. He later served in the First World War as a pilot. He is a member of Canada's Sports Hall of Fame.
### Alt Text for the Photo

A black-and-white vintage portrait photograph of a young man in his late teens or early twenties, standing frontally with hands clasped behind his back in a formal pose. He has a slender, athletic build, short dark hair neatly combed, and a serious, direct gaze at the camera. He wears a dark one-piece tank-style swimsuit with thin shoulder straps, featuring a prominent white emblem on the chest depicting wings flanking a circular medallion or wheel-like design. His legs are bare, and he stands barefoot on a plain studio background. The image has a sepia-toned, early 20th-century aesthetic, with a faint signature or mark in the lower right corner.

“I dreamed I felt free… really free in my Maidenform Concertina” (1969). Striking illustrative photography here. Good idea to feature an active model. Athletic wear now isn’t much different than this.

Front cover to Flatland (1884) by Edwin Abbott Abbott, who died #onthisday in 1926. Read Ian Stewart's introduction to the strange tale of A. Square's geometric adventures, the first ever book that could be described as “mathematical fiction” publicdomainreview.org/essay/a... #otd

“After I put on my bathing suit, you must not look at me until I get into the water.”

“Why not?” asked Frog.

“Because I look funny in my bathing suit. That is why,” said Toad.

“You’re so lucky! I wish I didn’t have to work!”

People act like we’re getting a permanent vacation.

The reality is we are forced to live in legislated poverty.

Barred from earning or marrying without losing our meagre benefits.

Denied autonomy.

And we’re sick & in pain.

It’s a 24/7 job.
