Humanist. I think shared values, recognition of shared humanity, and decent behaviour towards others are ultimately more important than beliefs or identity. We need to talk more. I spend too much time keeping up with politics

I recently sat down with three leaders who are part of the @obamafoundation.bsky.social's alumni network to hear more about their work to strengthen democracy in Hungary and Poland. They’re an example for us all. Take a look:

Looks like the “AI is hitting new grad jobs, better be a plumber” narrative isn’t right (though prob not a bad idea to become a plumber).

They have fired the staff of the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report and 70 Epidemic Intelligence Service officers, who are disease detectives that respond to outbreaks around the world.

I cannot emphasize enough how dangerous it is to dismantle our disease surveillance infrastructure.

Trump said he deserved a cut for brokering the TikTok deal, and at once there was agreement that his son Baron would have a top executive slot... though he hasn't asked for it, and has no apparent qualifications to hold it. This is how Trump 2.0 works. www.telegraph.co.uk/us/news/2025...

A man born in Pretoria, 1971, left for Canada in 1989, might want to wind his neck in (though apartheid South Africa was not necessarily too traumatic place for those who could benefit from apartheid if could manage to resist being too troubled by the racist principles of the state and society)

Yep. As a humanist (“secular humanist“ in US and, presumably New Zealand, terms) I defend Brian Tamaki’s right to express his views. They‘re hateful, & anyone platforming him (eg Tommy Robinson) deserves condemnation. But, for the same reason we don’t have blasphemy laws, they’re not illegal.
sundersays.bsky.social
This statement of religious intolerance from Brian Tamaki is political speech that has legal protection. It is also a statement of prejudice and a promotion of discrimination and an opposition to freedom of belief that should be opposed, challenged & stigmatised in mainstream spaces.

Yes. All of those are grossly offensive, and very undesirable in our plural society. But aren't they in the same category as "F...the Conservatives; F...Labour; F...Chelsea; F...Starmer...

Maybe not. But we don't have a blasphemy law in this country, and it's essential that it stays that way (even if there was malign and provocative intent).

Seen from here in the UK, the primacy of money in American society seems too baked-in to remove it sufficiently from US politics. It would mean caps on spending during elections, getting rids of Super PACs…

To understand the scale of it, since the July 2024 election he's earned roughly £100k more as a brand ambassador for Direct Bullion than Starmer gets as PM.

This is a lie.

There are many criticisms you might sensibly and truthfully make of the Sentencing Council and the Sentencing Guidelines. I’ve been making them for years.

But this is an outright lie. Pure fabrication. A fraud on the public.

What I think you mean is that you disagree with the claim. I don’t imagine he cares about what you believe.
