We did it on a very cold day so we'd have reasonable assurance that nobody else would be daft enough to use a carpark up in the Peaks in such weather, and so we'd have a clear shot with a low cliff as a backstop. That all worked out, so science, right?

I am reminded of the time @andyg64.bsky.social invited me to a field test of the mini-trebuchet he'd built in a carpark in the Peaks on a jolly cold day. It was fun, especially the bit when we were explaining to a baffled National Parks warden what we were doing.

Right, it's #TWANG* day, so we're going to twang a load of stuff with our mini-catapult. Pay attention it's science.

First, a tennis ball. By way of calibration, if you will.

But we know what you're all asking... What would happen if we filled that tennis ball with concrete?

*Not a thing.

This. Casting Jared Leto is box office poison. I'm relieved I didn't know he was in BLADE RUNNER 2049 (2017), as I might've passed on seeing it in the cinema. As it was, I enjoyed the film except for his *every* scene. His mode of method acting is "How can I make this character fucking unbearable?"

Jenny Nicholson tweet continues to not miss
@JennyENicholson

How come major film studios keep being like Jared Leto may have allegations, but at least he looks weird, stars in box office bombs, and is not a good actor

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

Smeg. Yeah, Wallace. Getting my Edgars in a twist. At least I didn't say Poe.

Blessed are the frogs, for they keep making authoritarians look incredibly stupid

LET SLEEPING CORPSES LIE aka DON'T OPEN THE WINDOW and that's without even going into the non-English titles. Anyway, very different fare from a 1939 movie based on an Edgar Burroughs novel, as this week.

I applaud the sheer diversity of horror films shown in @talkingpicturestv.bsky.social "Cellar Club" thread. Tonight was a 1939 Bela Lugosi THE DARK EYES OF LONDON, next week is 1974's (takes a deep breath) BREAKFAST AT THE MANCHESTER MORGUE aka THE LIVING DEAD AT THE MANCHESTER MORGUE aka...

Seriously, in the entire history of the Nobel Peace Prize, has anyone ever actively lobbied to win it themselves? That is so weird. Mind you, "weird" is perfectly in character.

Also, if you're "in bed with flu", it's almost certainly Covid.

After a long pause, I've just done another England Covid & NHS update as we head into the autumn/winter season.

TLDR: we're in a significant Covid wave now, the NHS is stretched, get boosted if you're eligible.

Ah, happy 88th anniversary of the day Oswald Mosley tried to sell fascism to Liverpudlians – and someone concussed him with a brick

In #JapaneseFolklore there are #yokai known as bake icho no sei which are said to be the spirits of ginkgo trees. They appear near the trees wearing tattered robes and hitting a mallet. They have bright yellow skin the same colour as ginkgo leaves in autumn. Other than scaring...

It's my birthday this weekend, but I've taken today off so I can have a me day wandering around town when it's not too busy. Just had lunch at the excellent Ramen Monster in Bristol, and a beer made by OWLS, probably.
A table with an opened can of Yuzu "Hatachino Nest" lager, the logo for which is an owl.
