With big CEOs and even the US government memeing, does everything have to be a big joke all the time? I feel like I'm surrounded by Schrödinger's assholes 24/7, where I'm expected to laugh it off and agree or be called a buzzkill, even when serious things are happening.

Sigh, I really want to root for dev-owned studios to make it, because I want all of us to thrive, but when they meme their way through a legitimate criticism, I'm just depressed. Is professionalism dead? I get video games is more casual, but this seems super childish.

🫂 My first like 8 years in the industry resulted in almost no credits. Every project was either dropped, did poorly and gone, or uncredited. I think I have like 2 credits from that time. It sucks, Ben. You are extremely talented.

I think choice is becoming a victim of technological advances and player expectations. If you choose whether Bob or Jim live in a SNES RPG, you’ve got a different set of pixels and text boxes. Now you‘ve got a new set of voice lines, Hollywood tier animations, etc.

Thinking about it, the original Deus Ex may be the king of choice in a game with a story, because your choices are significant, linked to gameplay and unforced. From the very start, for instance, whether you use or avoid lethal force against the “terrorists” determines something about you.

Sometimes I will be trying to do something simple in Maya like trying to select a control, and Maya will be like "LOL, no you're not!" and yank my ability to do so like Lucy with the football.

And then it will laugh at me. 🙃

That next part where he said we're going to be watching stuff we watched before, but worse is so correct. I've always believed if you only reference animation & other games when animating, you never add anything new. AI does this exact thing but to the 11th degree by removing the human filter.

Also, chances are, if you were laid off, you were probably close to burn out right before because the environment and stress are usually like that right before it hits.

It sounds frivolous but a small thing like taking an extra hour to sit by the water after lunch helped me heal and even out my mental state more after my layoff than another hour sitting at my computer repeatedly refreshing the job sites for updated listings.
