I think choice is becoming a victim of technological advances and player expectations. If you choose whether Bob or Jim live in a SNES RPG, you’ve got a different set of pixels and text boxes. Now you‘ve got a new set of voice lines, Hollywood tier animations, etc.

Thinking about it, the original Deus Ex may be the king of choice in a game with a story, because your choices are significant, linked to gameplay and unforced. From the very start, for instance, whether you use or avoid lethal force against the “terrorists” determines something about you.

Sometimes I will be trying to do something simple in Maya like trying to select a control, and Maya will be like "LOL, no you're not!" and yank my ability to do so like Lucy with the football.

And then it will laugh at me. 🙃

That next part where he said we're going to be watching stuff we watched before, but worse is so correct. I've always believed if you only reference animation & other games when animating, you never add anything new. AI does this exact thing but to the 11th degree by removing the human filter.

I am bowled over by this. It is such an insanely stupid thing to say to a creative. "Give me 10 ideas." That is literally his job to have the ideas.

Pro-strat is throwing a shit ton of stuff into a pot and making a giant pot of soup during the weekend and eating it over the work week. Soup season is keeping me alive right now.

Just found out Zooey Deschanel is engaged to a Property Brother. This isn’t new news, it’s old but I didn’t know it.

Also, chances are, if you were laid off, you were probably close to burn out right before because the environment and stress are usually like that right before it hits.

It sounds frivolous but a small thing like taking an extra hour to sit by the water after lunch helped me heal and even out my mental state more after my layoff than another hour sitting at my computer repeatedly refreshing the job sites for updated listings.

As someone who went through a layoff, if you have the capacity, visiting places you always wanted to but are too busy during weekends is worth treating yourself to during this time. I went on a couple hikes, visited a popular dessert spot, hit up a few happy hour deals & it helped my anxiety.

Unemployment is a terrible soul-sucking experience and I'm sincerely sorry for everyone in the industry waiting out this downturn, though when I see pictures of my former colleagues at the pumpkin patch during the weekday, it does look a lot of fun

If I EVER give that talk about petting animations in video game that I keep thinking about, I'm going to stress how important it was that I got to work from home and be around and inspired by my cats. Also how it gives me the space to act out ideas comfortably without coworkers watching.
