@karendeepsidhu.bsky.social tells us about how monogamy/polygamy alters responses to heatwaves in burying beetles (well a 25oC Scottish heatwave anyway)

My latest article examines the #environmental impact of the #Gaza conflict. As @pmbigger.bsky.social from @cplusc.bsky.social noted: A substantial portion of land has now been destroyed, making it much harder to achieve any level of food sovereignty once the #genocide ends.

As Israeli airstrikes continue to devastate Gaza, claiming countless lives in an unrelenting conflict, a quieter but equally devastating crisis is unfolding — the environmental destruction left in its wake. Conservative estimates based on satellite imagery comparing before-and-after conditions suggest that the conflict, which began on October 7 last year, has left much of the enclave uninhabitable, with its scars likely to endure for years long after the bombs have stopped falling.

“It's amazing how pollution has dropped in #Paris in 15 years. @annehidalgo.bsky.social has filled the city with bike-lanes & not only has she reduced pollution by 40% but she’s also been re-elected.”

Trading car space for green space, bike space, kid space…trading pollution for people. Good trade.

Es alucinante cómo ha bajado la contaminación en París en 15 años. Anne Hidalgo lo ha llenado todo de carriles bici y no sólo ha reducido la contaminación en un 40%, sino que ha sido reelegida.

#BIPOC voices are often missing from autistic spaces, so here is a BIPOC starter pack! 😊

The image of autism as “only white boys” leads to underdiagnosis, discrimination & isolation for many

Our autistic community is much more diverse than that! ❤️

Final plenary by @tatsuya-amano.bsky.social concerning the language barriers in science. The hurdles for non-native English speakers are significant! #ASABWinter2024

Also, our congratulations to Tatsuya for winning the @britishecolsoc.bsky.social Equality and Diversity Champion award this week!
Tatsuya in front of a slide showing a runners race track titled “Language barriers to the generation of evidence by non-native speakers” Text reads :50% of non-native English speakers often decide not to give an oral presentation; 30% of non-native English speakers often decide not to attend a conference;
Presentation Need 94% more time to prepare and practice; Paper revision Frequency of language related revision is 12.5 times higher; Non-native Ask someone to edit their English for 75% or more of their papers; Values are for those with one publication

I'm very happy to share with you the results of a collaborative experiment between the Catawba Indian Nation and faculty, staff, and students at Davidson College.

Yield, growth, and labor demands of growing maize, beans, and squash in monoculture versus the Three Sisters🌽🫘🎃

A few take home points:
(a) The raised beds on June 15, 2023. (b) The Three Sisters planting design typically forms a large circular shape with maize/bean mounds interspersed with squash. In our study, the Three Sisters were established in raised beds by planting four maize seeds in a 6-in. (15.2 cm) square each with a bean plant 3 in. (7.6 cm) toward the edge of the bed on a diagonal with the center of the maize square. Maize/bean squares were spaced 4 ft (1.2 m) apart within each row. Squash seeds were planted in pairs between each maize/bean square.

Papers written by non-white economists receive 5.1% to 9.6% fewer citations than those written by white economists.

This disparity is not attributable to differences in research quality, author ability, or visibility.

However, this racial gap has declined by quite a bit in recent years.
