I know I missed this when it was a trend, but I finally got pictures of my basement museum from when I was in 2nd grade sent to me so here is my
"How it started/How it's going" 🦕🦑🐌⚒️

Good to see I had some early mollusk representation
A display of dinosaur and other prehistoric creatures on a display stand with name tags on each. A globe with different dinosaurs on it and where they are found hangs from a pipe next to it Childhood exhibit section with dinosaur, plesiosaur, and pterosaur art (bad), modern and fossil mollusk specimens, some fish displays, and a fake ammonite arrangement that you dig out of those clay children's activities Overview of a museum exhibit showing the Gastropod section with several cases and didactics and a Giant squid decal on the wall with 3D tentacles coming out Several ammonoids in a display case with a didactic

When I was reporting in Sudan several years ago, a driver warned me not to tell government officials when I was leaving because the airport is where they stop and detain writers.

So, yeah, this is a very bad sign. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Science doesn't work like in a civ game, studies canceled midway are useless and may never be picked up again, institutions that close are gone forever, postdocs and PhD students duing the research work need food and will leave science altogether after a decade of training in their specialization

The MMR vaccine is one of the most stunningly effective medical therapeutics in existence. It’s also safer than most of your everyday activities. This is simply an attempt to stop people from vaccinating.

I'm going to be the speaker this year for PRI’s teacher resource day this Saturday. Lots of materials are being donated and I'll be talking about the many educational opportunities to use mollusk research, and the Marvelous Mollusks exhibit.
Exhibit signage for the "Marvelous Mollusks: the secret world of shells" exhibit with a spiral of different shells on black, with a green and purple hyperrealism depiction of various Mollusks like snails oysters and cuttlefish as a backdrop. The PRI logo is at the top and funding including IMLS and NSF is at the bottom.

I missed this but just learned PRI is working on a virtual field experience to Greenland to accompany a study lead by Jessica Mejia at Syracuse on how meltwater beneath the Greenland Ice Sheet affects ice movement—and ultimately, global sea levels

Secrets Beneath Greenland’s Ice
What lies beneath the surface of the Greenland Ice Sheet may hold the key to understanding one of the most pressing climate challenges of our time: sea level rise.

New POLITICO report: Trump admin is “exploring options to sell parts of the government’s $1.6T student loan portfolio to the private market.”

We're announcing our willingness to purchase the portfolio for its market value. We will then subsequently cancel the debt.

Can I just say I hate this system so much. I've wasted full days of work crafting tailored applications for things that went to internal hires and have even interviewed for posts that went to the internal hires. Just let places give that person job security and dont waste the time of 200 applicants
fossilsndcoffee.bsky.social
Ok, ill leave your comments up to warn others. I have had the rug pulled out from under me in similar situations several times
fossilsndcoffee.bsky.social
*shrug* could be, but so few places that are not nightmares to live in are hiring at all and I'm not a vertebrate worker so I may have missed earlier ads

This whole section really.
Finally: AI cannot do your job, but an AI salesman can 100% convince your boss to fire you and replace you with an AI that can't do your job, and when the bubble bursts, the money-hemorrhaging "foundation models" will be shut off and we'll lose the AI that can't do your job, and you will be long gone, retrained or retired or "discouraged" and out of the labor market, and no one will do your job.
