NOAA is going to lose 1000+ employees today.

Will you join me in sending love notes to the remaining employees at NOAA labs & offices around the country?

Instructions & ~200 addresses here: docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

I'm starting to send mine today.

An assortment of postcards lying on a hardwood floor, in support of NOAA employees. They are a mix of National Marine Sanctuary poster illustrations of Monitor NMS (a Civil War shipwreck), Channel Islands NMS (sea lion & kelp), and Cordell Bank NMS (octopus on a reef). One looks like a hand-drawn and colored oceany cartoon. The backsides of two of the postcards say "Thank you for all you do for NOAA and the nation" and "Your work is important. You are important" and "HOLD THE LINE."

Anyway the point is I was thinking mappy educational materials could be a niche for you to sell direct to schools, and maybe informal learning places like libraries, aquaria, museums (possibly a markets)?

3D printers: WE NEED YOU! If you have a printer, start making whistles for your community. Volunteers of ours have been printing and passing them out across communities, over 200 have been handed out so far!

I’ll try to find a finished one!! I loooooove it. I cut the first one out of watercolor paper but it’s supposed to be wood. Working on that…

You out one stencil layer over a piece of paper, trace it in one color, then do another stencil in another color, and so on. And you end up with a single map of all the layers in different colors. It’s very tactile and the map looks great
katycroffbell.bsky.social
Of course I can’t find a photo of the final version but here are a few of the layers — on top is the outline of Narragansett Bay, below that is outlines of islands, and below that is ponds & rivers (there is also a lighthouses & bridges layer).
Layers of cut watercolor paper in the shape of Narragansett bay, islands, and ponds

It’s not too late to wear a mask.

It’s not too late to protect your health.

It’s not too late to show you care about the health of those around you.

It’s not too late to do your part to make public spaces inclusive & accessible.

It’s radical kindness & community care.

Want some good news?

Vineyard Wind, the 1st large-scale wind farm approved in America, has been under construction for years. A broken blade incident in 2024 set progress back.

Now about half of its 62 turbines are sending power to the Massachusetts grid! 🔌

The offshore wind farm is sending power from at least 30 turbines to the Massachusetts grid.

Posted this quickly & without comment before going sailing this morning--very proud of my alma mater today.

Hoping other universities follow their lead.

Students, employees, and alumni just received an email from Sally Kornbluth -- MIT says NO to the “Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education.”

"we cannot support the proposed approach to addressing the issues facing higher education."
Dear Madam Secretary,

I write in response to your letter of October 1, inviting MIT to review a “Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education.” I acknowledge the vital importance of these matters.

I appreciated the chance to meet with you earlier this year to discuss the priorities we share for American higher education.

As we discussed, the Institute’s mission of service to the nation directs us to advance knowledge, educate students and bring knowledge to bear on the world’s great challenges. We do that in line with a clear set of values, with excellence above all. Some practical examples:

SouthCoast Wind received permit approvals from the Bidens to put 141 turbines south of Martha's Vineyard. #RenewableEnergy

Now they're suing the trumps for "bad faith" & pursuing a political agenda to dismantle the offshore wind industry "with no legal basis to stand on" Vineyard Gazette reports:
Offshore Wind Project Calls Out Government's Wind Strategy
SouthCoast Wind, which plans to build 141 turbines off the coast of the Vineyard, is pushing back against what it calls a “bad faith” campaign from the federal government to shut down renewable energy...

As Germany demilitarized after World War II, it dumped massive amounts of its leftover munitions into the Baltic Sea.

A recent study has found that some of those submerged weapons, which are still releasing toxic compounds, now host more marine organisms than the sediments around them.

Reminder that China has TWO deep-diving research submersibles: Jiaolong (7000 m I think) and Fendouzhe (full ocean depth), both built in the last 20 years. And note how they closely resemble the Mirs.
