7. Good, sharp scissors are an essential tool. Train your family not to touch your fabric scissors.

6. Wash your fabric before you try to sew with it. (In rare cases this doesn't apply, but I'm pretty much a if it can't go in the washing machine (or at least be hand washed), I'm not wearing it person.
kehf.bsky.social
5. Investing in a simple serger was worth it. It makes so many sewing chores easier.

This goes double for the sewing machine you bought in your twenties that is now older than you were when you first bought it (and the regular maintenance you had done on both machines was an A+ life choice).

4. The time spent pinning a section to be sewn is worth it. Do not be tempted to skip pinning unless you _want_ to spend the next hour picking out stitches that went awry.

3. Buy the best fabric you can afford. Your labor doesn't cost you money, but spending your time fighting with terrible fabric or putting a lot of time into something that won't hold up to wear is a waste of a different sort.

Thread of things I would tell my younger self, sewing edition (in no particular order):

1. The iron is your friend, use it through out the sewing process.

2. Making a muslin & doing a fit test is always worth doing, especially for a new pattern.

Come teach with me for @resistanceschool.bsky.social !!

Yesterday I was told that the class I’m scheduled to teach this month, Confronting Oppression & Injustice, is no longer part of our curriculum. This is a required class yet there was no discussion, no faculty vote, just an email saying the class no longer exists. This is what it’s like in Texas now.

Our thoughts are with the public servants caught up in the latest round of RIF notices. We've said this before, and we'll repeat it now: You matter. Your work matters.
OMB says ‘substantial’ federal employee layoffs have begun
Just before the shutdown, OMB told agencies to draft RIF plans for programs that wouldn’t have alternative funding sources.

After spending 43 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit, evidence hidden by the prosecution reversed his conviction. Rather than finally enjoying freedom, ICE abducted him for deportation

Depraved.

Also: if you work for ICE, even if you’re not one of the ones arresting citizens or tackling 15-year-olds or zip-tying kids together and segregating them by race, you’re part of the mechanism making it happen, and you should suffer long-term social and post-regime-change consequences.

Some weirdo on Twitter has been absolutely melting down for like 36 straight hours because I posted:

When this is over, do not forget what ICE did, and what ICE is. And do not make room for them in society. Make sure they know that they are, and will continue to be, reviled and beneath contempt.

Unconstitutionally taking money that the law says must be spent on one purpose & using it for something else—when it's to establish personalist control over the FUCKING MILITARY—is about as dangerous a constitutional crisis/failure as you can imagine

Via: www.nbcnews.com/politics/tru...
The Office of Management and Budget sent a notification to Congress about their intent to use research and development funds to pay members of the military, two sources with direct knowledge tell NBC News.

A spokesperson for the OMB confirmed to NBC News that it plans to use the research and development funds and that there are two years' worth of funds available within the Department of Defense.

I've been busy as heck this week and haven't had time to keep up on this. So the partner just paid another $500 toward our rent. I got paid on thurs and paid $100 toward our electric and $300 toward the car payment. But we desperately need to get this funded.

That’s when? Not when the first invaders invaded and forced assimilation on Indigenous ppl or str8 up killed them or trafficked Black Africans and put them in forced labor camps and raped the women and then enslaved their own children?

Not then?

anyone else notice that the west took a turn for the worse once the concept of signaling one’s own social virtue became derogatory, almost as if cynically deriding all displays of charity and good will is indicative of a deeply cynical and nihilistic society capable of collaborating in genocide

True story: I got asked about this during my oral qualifying exam — where I had the flu and was on like eleventy drugs — and blanked on Olber’s name 😭

But thankfully I knew the paradox, which is a fun one:
mcnees.bsky.social
“Why is the night sky dark, if we live in an infinite universe?”

Kepler, Halley, and Cheseaux all pondered this apparent paradox, but the question is commonly attributed to Heinrich Olbers, who was born #OTD in 1758. 🧪 🔭

A diagram shows arrows radiating from a central point, indicating directions, with lots of white disks (stars) surrounding the central point. An etching of Hans Olbers. He wears a heavy coat, vest, and high collared white shirt. His wispy hair is receding.

'It is no secret that student attendance has plummeted in recent years, with near-empty lecture halls a staple of the post-pandemic world.'

Really? I lecture to all our 1st years. Lecture hall is full, not near-empty. Student engagement picked up last year and (early days) seems stronger again. 1/2
