NOPE has remained stuck in my craw (much like a certain decoy horse) since I first saw it.

It has so much to say about its human characters — and plenty of ink has been spilled about that — but my focus lies elsewhere.

If you, like me, love the film's central antagonist, please give this a read.

Was Nope’s antagonist really a monster?

but the great thing is you can just cast on and knit a bunch of rows and bind off and BOOM! scarf!! with just 3 techniques.
kellymerka.bsky.social
I checked my book and it offers this variant that is purportedly easier:
A photo of a page from the book Cast On Bind Off. It reads: "Long-Tail Cast On:
Thumb Version. This is a variation of the Long-Tail Cast On that is easier for some folks than holding the yarn in the traditional slingshot position. The result is the same as the standard Long-Tail Cast On. CHARACTERISTICS: Edge is elastic and attractive. First row begins with wrong side (private side) of work. GOOD FOR: Any stitch pattern and any project." A photo of a page from the book Cast On Bind Off. It reads: "Working the Cast On. 1) Measure out a tail of yarn using whatever method you prefer (page 13). Make a slip knot and place it on the needle.
Hold the needle and working yarn in your right hand. 2) Wrap the tail end around your left thumb counterclockwise (yarn comes from needle to inside thumb and wraps around to outside of thumb). Using the other fingers of your left hand to grasp the tail, insert needle tip under the thumb loop. 3) Holding the needle with your left hand, use your right hand to wrap the working yarn around the needle." A photo of a page from the book Cast On Bind Off. It reads: "4) Pass thumb loop over the needle tip and pull the strand to tighten the stitch. 5) Repeat steps 2-4 for the desired number of stitches."

There are alternatives but I like long-tail because it is useful in a lot of projects, and when you learn stretchy cast-ons (like for hats!) they tend to be similar. It also leaves a nice edge.
kellymerka.bsky.social
I learned long-tail cast-on first and it's demonstrably harder than knit/purl stitches. I will admit I still don't like casting on, but once it's in your hands it's not too bad.
kellymerka.bsky.social
Casting on is the very first row you knit and binding off is the very last one!

Part of why I love this book is I go long periods without knitting and forget everything I know and then use it to help me remember

I'm replying way too much but since you also mentioned it... here's one of my family's goats
A black and brown buckskin goat with moonspots stands in a field. A black and brown buckskin goat with moonspots looks skeptically at the camera. Several other goats are standing behind her. While I'm at it, this one is SO USEFUL because cast-ons/bind-offs can make or break a project

I found this recent reddit post that includes discussion of English vs. continental style as well as knitting left-handed ("mirror knitting")

My two cents is because it is inherently ambidextrous I would recommend knitting right-handed because if you learn left-handed you would always be creating a project going the opposite direction and it will affect how you read patterns
kellymerka.bsky.social
Found it! I like this one because it remains useful even as you advance because there's an extensive dictionary of various techniques and stitches

I'm a left-handed knitter! To be honest, I knit "right-handed" but since the craft requires you to engage both hands it has never been uncomfortable for me. I learned from my grandmother but can go look at the beginner book I liked...

aesthetic != quality

there's lots of stuff out there that makes me madder than a wet hen, that I still don't consider to be "bad." my fury has its roots in my very specific aesthetic sensibilities!!
maxkriegervg.bsky.social
as a lifelong critic, my best advice on this topic:

practice thinking from the perspective of other ppl. consider where they're coming from, why a piece might resonate w them.

this will help you differentiate between "not for me" and "it isn't good". be kind with the former, don't fear the latter!
carolynmichelle.bsky.social
respectfully: no. develop your own taste, absolutely, but own it. it's fine to think that popular thing is bad. it's fine to not have an opinion too, but i see statements like this one all the time and i just want to push back a bit: there's nothing wrong with having the courage of your convictions.
