Urgh. I go for the you don’t bother me I don’t bother you approach. But that does rather depend on them getting down into the floorboards in a timely fashion, and I’m not sure this one hasn’t taken a shine to the high life on my nice soft carpet.

Well, I knew 2025 was going to be tough but I’d no idea how tough. It’s time though, at last, for new beginnings. I’m so glad to be working at Cork. So glad to have two beautiful, mad children. So glad to have a circle of dear, dear friends who uplift me. Here’s to starting over.

Apparently I’m going to be in ITV border life this evening at 7pm. It was lovely to record, down by the Tweed and Neidpath Castle. What isn’t on camera is my little 4yo daughter having a tantrum because Rich, interviewed with me, dared to be interviewed when he’d been playing with her 🙃

This was one of the main reasons why I wrote Wanderers, and why I continued with Way Makers. There is *so* much evidence of women active in all sorts of spheres, including the outdoors. Some evidence is so ludicrously easy to find, not seeing it has to have been a choice. Time for better histories.

It’s been a week. But yesterday I led an adult nature writing/walking class that involved five grown women rolling down a hill (literally), lying in heaps giggling; a kingfisher; an encounter with bull rushes; a meeting with a juvenile mistle thrush; and three mergensers plus heron. So that was ace.

It was rather. The report says it was a ‘difficult’ procedure because he basically shoved my organ into a great big loop with his camera so no wonder it bloody hurt. Why are they so offended by people’s genuine pain???!?!?!?

Well, I guess it speaks to the effective advocacy against medical misogyny that @pollyrowena.bsky.social and others are embarked upon that, in the middle of an agonising invasive procedure this afternoon, when I got told off for wailing, I felt able to shout back *and* I got the extra drugs I needed

I can’t count. Thank god I do words. But if you’re not in the midst of redundancies, a couple of thoughts: you might well be soon. Look to what else you could do with your huge skills and knowledge. Never doubt those skills or that knowledge, even if the institution you work for casts you off 7/n

But I know so many colleagues in UK HE are in the midst of the sort of body-crushing anxiety I was experiencing last year. It is wretched and miserable. I wonder if others will follow me to work in Ireland, where neoliberalism hasn’t taken root in the same horrifying ways. What a loss for the UK 6/n

And @stephenmossauthor.bsky.social who gave me time and confidence. I became more intentionally a writer of the Tweed valley. Work came from that. I got offered work mentoring other writers in the Scottish Borders-work I’m continuing because it has been so rewarding. I have been very lucky. 4/n

A major fillip then was a commission from the currently-taking-a-social-media-break Glen O’Hara. That was my first freelance piece. Gradually more work came in, with work generating work. People were so kind on here, too, speaking with me, Zooming with me. Thank you @gailsimmons.bsky.social 3/n

When I was made redundant from Edge Hill last June I thought my academic career was over. My pension gone. It was very, very bleak. I was super lucky to have had writing creatively to fall back on. Tho it took some time as my confidence was 0, gradually I got some work freelancing. 2/n
