The end of federal enforcement of special ed laws. Some states - including MN - will likely be ok. But a lot of disabled kids in a lot of states are going to lose the education that federal law and decades of jurisprudence say they are owed.
Education Department wipes out special ed office in shutdown layoffs, union says
The Education Department laid off nearly everyone at the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services.

Due to Tennessee’s abortion ban, Mayron Hollis was forced to continue a pregnancy that threatened her life. An emergency delivery left her without a uterus and her baby with medical issues.

This was their first year in a post-Roe state (pub. Feb. 2024):
She Was Denied an Abortion After Roe Fell. This Is a Year in Her Family’s Life.
Tennessee law prohibits women from having abortions in nearly all circumstances. But once the babies are here, the state provides little help. We followed one family as they struggled to make it.

so many authors in discussion of this say they have low employability (like me)
I made the bargain of low income in exchange for time to write: am experienced in how to live low-income. Even so, options get cut off as you accumulate injuries; poverty traps catch you; you don't grow more employable.

You should be concerned about the rate of authors leaving publishing. Especially from marginalized communities. This year I have seen so many authors just pack it up and go. And it's only getting worse.

The absolutely nightmarish situation for authors right now is a big part of why I'm probably never going to stop teaching.

I like teaching, but it's frustrating that full-time authoring feels like it will never, ever be an option. At least until I hit retirement age.

Authors leaving is one piece of the puzzle, even less visible are the people who drop out before breaking in in the first instance because we can see the hellscape the industry is becoming and attrition takes us out before we find rep/debut deal.

it’s October 11th, which means that nine years ago this little essay went live … did it change my life? yes, and most definitely not how I expected.

so let that be a lesson for you this Coming Out Day: whatever you think the future holds, it does not. life comes at you, for worse and for better.

New reporting: many apparently fired at CDC in 'error'. This is a failure by design given that the admin does not care about fulfilling agency missions. This is the kind of error that should have political consequences.

Unserious people cause real-world harm.

You're overlooking Jared Leto, I think.

I've seen a LOT of people saying they're not going to see it just based on him being in it.

Also, the fact that Disney didn't bother to properly follow up on Legacy.

Chicago priest Fr. Larry Dowling describes procession to ICE facility: “No one had the courage to speak directly to us. No one from Homeland Security could stand in the presence of the Monstrance holding the Blessed Sacrament. No wonder. Evil is repelled, recoils in the presence of Christ.”

Look, this is what Catholicism does so well. Yes girl, BRING OUT THE MONSTRANCE. MAKE THEM SAY IT IN FRONT OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT. Martin Luther could *never*. He failed to predict the Trump Presidency and also is directly implecated. I am so serious.

Unconstitutionally taking money that the law says must be spent on one purpose & using it for something else—when it's to establish personalist control over the FUCKING MILITARY—is about as dangerous a constitutional crisis/failure as you can imagine

The Office of Management and Budget sent a notification to Congress about their intent to use research and development funds to pay members of the military, two sources with direct knowledge tell NBC News.

A spokesperson for the OMB confirmed to NBC News that it plans to use the research and development funds and that there are two years' worth of funds available within the Department of Defense.

I had a lot of convos with people who said they were sympathetic, but Defund the Police was a "bad slogan". I told them it wasn't a slogan. It was an answer. It was an answer to the constant question "what can we do to actually lower crime and make our neighborhood's safer?"

Anyway. Here we are.

seems like a non-insignificant percentage of rage against the machine's fanbase are young republican men driving SUVs bopping their head to anti-oil, pro-immigrant songs thinking the lyrics are about how they wish their suburban parents would get off their back
Tom Morello tweets: "Fascinating that all those “don’t tread on me” posers and their AR-15’s are nowhere to be seen and government tyranny is instead being opposed by a guy in an inflatable frog suit."

Someone named Manny replies: "@grok
why do some people say Tom Morello and band mates are RAGE FOR THE MACHINE and not against ?"
