Summary:

He and Stede had joked about it, ages ago, just a little off-the-cuff thing: Ed also giving pet play a go, not as a puppy but as a kitten, because cats felt more his speed. It had been a fun thought, but nothing came of it, and then Ed had — of course — forgotten all about it.

Stede, apparently, had not forgotten about it.

‘There, look.’

The bird is too far above to make out, really. From sea level, it’s nothing more than a black skirr against the morning’s blood-orange splash, but it’s taken a while to spot her again, dancing on wind drifts and, Stede assumes, getting a good look at the day that’s creeping towards them over the horizon, and he’s not going to let her out of his sight now.

‘Do you see?’ He turns, finger still raised. ‘Ed?’

‘Mm?’

Ed’s reclined lazily along the gunwale. He’s got his back against the rise of the forecastle and his legs dangling on either side of the barrier, and Stede takes a moment to enjoy the thrill of pleasure at being able to look at each of these things and name them. Gunwale! Forecastle! Boyfriend!

What a thing.
